Got an Idea to completely avoid disaster leakage

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cool idea, but doesn't seem like it would hold the water during a catastrophic break, i.e. a whole panel blow out....

Yeah, more of a sump/plumbing leak situation. Or forgetting to turn off the water during a water change.... Which I've done plenty lol

Someone on MFK has trench drains along the periphery of his fish room. I wanted to do that, but got overruled in favor of two floor drains with the equipment room floor slightly inclined toward the drains. On the other side of the wall, the cement floor was coated with Red Guard and tiled. We can survive a flood, but hopefully, we will never have a catastrophic tank fail.

^ that's a great idea, but that requires total remodeling of the floor and such

No, I don't think it would be able to get a total blow out, that's why I said leakage haha. Its more common to have a good flowing leak then a whole panel bust out, and if that did happen to my 200 a good amount of water would be diverted, nowhere near all of it but in that situation harm reduction is the most important factor, so it would be better then nothing!

On paper it sounds like a great idea. For small leaks in plumbing overflow accidents seems like a good way to contain the water. We all know no matter how careful we are water always seems to find the floor!! On my 300 i laid some rubber mat down on the carpet under the stand the idea was so the wood from the stand wouldn't stain the carpet. But it didn't wrap up high around the stand so it didn't contain any water. If your stand has cabinet doors seems they would have to be shorten on the bottom if this box under the stand stood 6-12" high.

Oh yeah the cabinet I'm building so I would make it to fit, maybe just use slot paneling I can just slide up and off instead of having to open them outwards.

About a leak sensor, what happens if your on vacation or just not home for a while? floor still gets ruined. A sensor doesn't help that, only if your in the room and if you are then you could probably tell your tank is leaking. Its not going to be expensive to put together and it will be a good peace of mind thing as I've said. With a drain attached even if the whole tank drians through a pretty steady leak it won't over flow and ruin the floor anyway.

Hmm, I know this is not what your really after but.. in some asain based lfs they set there tanks up on fruit crates? kind of like an IBC but not intended to hold water and much more solid, they line these with a liner or so and use it for the sump + most install a drain for easy water changes.

You could do the same but only use the crate for the catching purpose and clad it plywood or so to make it more appealing to the eye only downside is they are 4ft cubed ruffly so you would be wasting a fair bit of floor space.

I think they also cut slots out of the crate and run metal beams to help support the tanks.

Uhhhhm... a little off topic but do tanks get major leaks or blow outs often??

I'm pretty new to the "monster fish" hobby and have a 120g tank hangin out in my livingroom with BRAND NEW carpet...you guys are making me nervous!
