Got some new Snakeheads

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got myself a juvenile Giant Snakehead.
Not as pretty as yours (they're absolutely lovely!),
but I sure love this guy's ferocity.

*WHUMP!* and there goes the feeder in a brilliant shower of shiny scales... :headbang2

Sexy sexy channa jelly I am most jealous. How did you acquire them if you don't mind me asking? I would try sqratch's idea of directing a fan at the water surface and leaving the lights off to cool the water. Incidentally my stewartii didn't feed for several days after getting them. Also if they are from cooler water there is potential that their metabolism may be slower, and also that food in that kind of habitat would be more scarce than in warmer conditions, so this may have something to do with it. Good luck, and more pics please

No Problem. Theres a shop down my way (Down South) Wildwoods, that always has a really good selection of Snakeheads I think they have five species at the moment excluding mine as bought all of them and very good with Oddballs. They deal directly with a guy in Asia. They are sometimes expensive. I had told him a little while ago I was after sp. me$£$^%$ Leapard, Can't remember how to spell it. They went to that region and got these. They do have something called Lime green Punctata at the moment which are even more expencive than the guys I bought. I was tempted but have now spent my fish money for the next couple of months.

I have heard from the guys at snakeheads.org that they eat nothing other than live bloodworms so I have to go get some supplies.

Jelly, totally awesome SH.. very hot! Fantastic colours!! What you can try to do is if you have a sump or something or a canister filter with the power on the top and a bucket style at the bottom, is you can submerse it in a larger bucket of cool/cold ice water… the temps will regulate themselves eventually… what about a peliter cooling system?

Something like a PC cooling system.. but.. well… different. =)

Good luck with them! They look freaking hot!

Thanks, The bucket idea sound good and achievable, I will give it a go.

Whats a peliter cooling system?

A peltier is a heating/cooling unit, it’s typically found in those crappy drink chillers (you know for the cars/caravans) usually at your local electronic shop. They usually get the ambient temp down 5 or 10 degrees, being a computer d0rk people also hook them up to cool their CPU for over clocking, they can freeze up so they aren’t suggested.. I wouldn’t know how to hook up a fish friendly cooler, you could get a large amount of plastic hose and roll it up into one of those little chillers (the longer the hose the more it will cool) and drill 2 holes into the lid/base of the cooler and have a water pump to pump the water thru the cooler, thus making the tube water a tad cooler… this may work, I wouldn’t see why not? You could purchase a 2nd hand mini0bar fridge.. :P

Remove your tank lids, open up your sump door.. use air pumps to air rate the water (allowing more movement, this cools the temp down.

But I would suggest .. buy a small fridge, drill some holes in the door, run a heap of hose in coils and attach a pump to push the water thru

:P good luck!
