Got the 300! Filtration ideas needed!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The 540 gallon pond was a gallon per hour so it was roughly a quarter of total volume once a week but I eventually upped it because a drip system needs to be increased to effectively change the amount of water done in a straight water.change. Hope that made sense

Rough pic of starting. Nothings glued. Think I finally figured out the design.uploadfromtaptalk1352486019712.jpg

Just so you guys have an idea where the pumps going to be.

Will the overflows work like this? The 2 pipes going to the sump.

That'll work. Seen it done using flex tubing also (instead of pvc piping)... Not sure why though. Easier? Less resistance?

I bought a piece of pvc tubing but that stuff is so dumb how it doesn't unflex itself. I left a piece of conduit in it for 3 days, took it out and it was still curled. It's kind of hard to work with. I wanted to cut a hole in the top of the rubbermaid box and just set an elbow in it, so the pvc tubing would be easy to just move out of the way. Also idk where to begin cementing this stuff haha.

To straighten tubing, heat needs to be applied (hair dryer, boiling in water). There's tons of info on the web to walk you through. I've done it like you did with a pipe running through it, but I let it set it in the sun on blacktop driveway for a few days(summer time). It didn't get perfectly straight but good enough for what I used it for.

I think this is the final design. The x2 unions are on the 2 overflows, and the line back to the filter has a valve and a t to split the water into each tower. Thoughts?

Horizontal runs on gravity drains slow water flow pretty significantly. This may not be necessary, but just in case you run into an issue with your drains not being able to handle your pumps output, using a 45 fitting would probably increase your flow. In other words, instead of those two long horizontal runs, you would have downward 45 degree slope to your sump. Of if 45 degrees is too much, you could find a 22.5 degree fitting.

Just a heads up on that rigid insulation: the kind I used had a reflective sheeting on it. I placed it reflective side down (facing water) and it totally dissolved...the reflective material had basically disintegrated and made it's way into the water. I didn't lose any fish but it freaked me out. So now I wrap it in cellophane to avoid tha from happening again.

+1 on what was said about heating the tubing to straighten it out. I placed a roll I got in the sun and it was good to go within a few minutes.
