Got two Hydrolycus tatauaia, now a question...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the darker bodied tat in the middle. he was about 10 inches. very slow growing. I moved him from a 125g to a 250g but still never really gained any size. eating hikari sticks frozen shrimp and live feeders.

this was about 3 years ago bro. goliath grew out and started slashing cudas in half. there was some rhaphs on the other side of this tank(not pictured) tats would shank there eyes during feeding. My largest cuda swallowed a scomb. It was peaceful for a while, but later turned into chaos.

This is good information. I've always wanted a setup close to what you had there, but I figured there would be issues. I still would love a pack of cudas in with my goliath, as long as I can find them for a decent price. That way when the goliath does take them out, it won't hurt so much :D

Definitely taking payara out of the equation, I don't need any eyes getting slashed and bodies impaled.

The rhaphs were slow getting their food down. So the food kinda looked like a baseball set up on a T, tats would just go for the homerun and take eyes and faces with the huge uppercut swing.

I have now tried to get my two H.tatauaias to take dead Food for over a month.. and FINALLY they did it!!
Was getting a bit worried at this point, and so yesterday i spotted one of my smaller balance jigs that hangs on my note-Board.... why have i not tought of that before!! :screwy:

I stripped off the plastic Fish imitation, bended out the hook, and clipped of the Sharp end. Then i peeled some market shrimp, and chopped off the tail end.

Worked out perfectly! They both striket at the short moment i was holding the bait still, making only a minor vibration movement, in between the rapid jerking.

This made my day/night :D

They won't go for the leader either? If they do you can put a long piece of airline tubing (longer then their mouths so it doesn't get stuck) just after the food, so if they go too far they hit that and stop. It would suck to have one of your fish swallow a whole leader haha

I was considering the risk of them damaging their teeth on the metal there, but i took a shoot at it.. and both of them where totally focused on the moving piece of shrimp. But of course, as they get more "agressive" when feeding there could be a problem here :D I will definitively try to eliminate that risk of teeth damage, and also that airline tubing idea was Nice :)
