gotta brag...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Eggs were just laid Sunday, so no fry yet.

I just moved one of the non-paired fish into a 125 (with 5 marmorata growouts) since it was being beaten badly from both sides. I'm soaked. :D So far, due to his size advantage and the marms' being shy, there's no sign that it will be a problem. If they start to harrass him, I'll set up another temp. tank to treat him.

Gotta love Hops. They are definately one of the best fish to keep with Crenicichla. Just look AWESOME with them. I already posted in your other thread, but figured I'd say congrats again in here!! :D

I was talking with someone, and they said they know someone who got some Brazilian parrots from Rapps several years ago (when I got my first batch...they were awesome) and has grown them up, and they have bred for him. Not sure if this is confirmed or not, but fingers crossed.

ACUTIROSTRIS!! Awesome!!! :D More pics!! You only have a male??? Did you ever have a pair? At what size did they start reallly showing the sexual differences and typical female traits?

When I got the acute, Jeff only had this one, and Ken Davis had already sold the only one he had at the time...so I've never had a pair. I was tempted when one of the vendors here had some recently, but his supplier didn't know the difference between acutes and cobras, and I didn't need more cobras...and the size difference would have required me to keep them separate for a long time. Anyway, I almost feel guilty about the breeding that's going on, since this has always been HIS tank. ;)

Yeah. I member that all too well. It wasn't as hard to get the supplier to be able to distinguish them as you would think though...;).

I wish that acutes had more defined gender traits....lol....tis difficult to sex them sometimes....

Acutes are one of the easiest pikes to sex! Simply look at the tail. Females have a white edge to the top and bottom portion of the caudal fin. And unlike most lugubris pikes, they show this trait at a very early age.

I can get my hands on a hot little female if anyone is interested in her...

Yeah, I've heard that, just never really been able to notice it. Perhaps I am only looking at males. How large are they before they start showing it? Is it a 'clearish' white? Or a definate, bold white?

I guess clearish white would best describe it but it's more clearly defined than the white on the edge of a female chromide's tail. The females' start showing this trait at about 4". Much smaller than the typical 8"-10" for other lugubris pikes.

Check out this female:

Also note the striations on the male's belly which are absent on the female.

I think this would be a GREAT time for you to show pictures of your pair that you used to have for educational refrence. :D I've noticed something similar to what you are talking about on males....perhaps I am thinking something different. LoL

It's funny. Of all the pics I took of my acutes I never caught the female's tail...

I've never seen a male with the white "flashing" on his caudal.
