I've had this same question as well...I caught those when I was in FL...are mayans another name for red terrors?

Louie any thoughts?

Red terors are different than Mayans. IMO way prettier as most bright red/orange ,bigger and way meaner but not all over the place like Mayans.
I have only seen them in deep canals they dont like sick heat like Mayans.
Prettiest cichlids here esp the big bright males.

My father in law has caught them but in deep canals in a boat . I fish from shore and see them as you can't miss them but they won't bite.

Thee are lots around here in a particular canal but they wont bite regardless of what I use as bait.

I am off from work today and might go in after noon after my 10 hours sleep lol one last try . Old guys say if you tick them off they wil hit a sinking lure out of anger but again would think you need a boat for that type deeper water .

I stopped going for a while as just to hot in low 100's but now its about 90 which is okay for hour or 2.

I fish exact canal here that pic came from but without a boat limited and my fear of gators (fresh) sharks (salt) has prevented me from going out on actual water lol.

I'm glad that I live in North Fl... We get an occasional non-native, but nothing compared to South of us... I've heard of some massive Oscars being caught around Orlando by bass guys...

theres supposedly some massive oscars in the same canals where i catch the mayans but havent found any yet.. i have got reports from many different people saying they are in there

Why would you not want cichlids around you?. They don't take any toll on the native fish .

They live in HOT canals ,ponds where native fish can't live in during summer as so hot even than they stay only around structures and rock edges.

There are jumbo bass here where canal meets lake and I guess its due to the cichlids they eat.

My wife and I went to supermarket earlier . I hang out behind supermarket while she buys . Its a canal in direct sun (water hot to the touch) and its fun to catch cichlids .

As USUAL I couldnt catch what I wanted but its fun 30 minute fishing

Its easy "cheat" fishing lol because once you drop bait the cichlids hit it .

I saw it showcased on a fishing program on the Outdoor Channel. They were catching like 5 pound Oscars, it was amazing! Also another cool fish that has invaded South FL that there is NO WAY to ever get rid of is the Cobra Snakehead, and they can fish for them almost 9 months out of the year. I love Nevada, but that would be some FUN FISHING!!!

The snake head is one of the rarest fish in S.Florida I have only spotted them once in a canal out of countless canals.

I don't know if cobra snake head is same type as I hooked .

I actually thought it was a bowfin lol till another guy fishing said "nice size snakehead" .

It tore my line but it was my own doing as my spincast reel is set for no drag at all . I usually fish for under 12 inch cichlids in that canal.

Oscars which are generations removed from fish tanks/pet stores are some of the most bland, mud looking fish I have seen lol.
