GPH Too Strong For Tank [Sump Setup]

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup. More then likely you'll find a piece of PVC that slips right into the opening on your bulkhead, if not get a bunch of fittings, find the one that slips in the best and return the rest.

The only thing I'm worried about is the width of the pvc making the drain smaller aka less drainage. I just saw a sort of "tapered" pvc on home depot's website I think I'm going to look into.

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...=10053&zip=32548&storeId=10051&distance_1=100

So I'm going to head to home depot now and see what I can do about tapered pvc plus the T fitting for the second intake. I'll update you on results when I get back.

Well the stuff I was looking at is PVC so I don't see why not. Anyhow here's an update. (Everything I got is made of actual PVC as far as material)

I went and got flexi pvc hosing for the pipestand. It fits in the holes pretty well. It's not air tight but with the pressure of water as it is the overflow fills perfect. Seeing as how the bottom filled almost 2.5" before I assumed I would have to at least incorporate that distance when running the pipes so I ran them about 4"-5" from the overflow slits. I was wrong.... The water immediately stops at the pipes and drained perfect but it still splashed being about a 4-5" drop.

SO, I cut some egg crate and put it over the hose ends. I used this egg crate to hold up some pot scrubbies up to roughly an inch from the overflow slits. This worked great! There was no splashing effect BUT now I have like a (best way to describe it, seriously) farting sound. I THINK it's maybe from the pipes sucking in the pot scrubbies and releasing the opposite way making a fart sound?... Not sure but I moved them around a bit and the sound subsided. Now I'm down to like a frog gulp every like 30-60 seconds which is much better than the constant fart.

Any ideas what this sound is and how to fix it? (I just can't win)

P.S. As far as the T piece I found one that the intake hose fit in great and that worked beautifully.

So what mag did you get and what mag do you think you should have gotten?

I already had a mag drive 2 (250gph) in my w/d sump. I thought 250gph on 125g was a lot. I researched gph for sumps and now of course I know that's nothing. So I purchased a 9.5 (950gph) and I'm currently running them both.

Get me a pic of what you did and I'll point out your issue. I love your description methods btw.

Mike

I know it looks extremely ghetto but I didn't have any extra pvc to hold up the egg crate so what I did was cut a hole in the egg crate and put the piping that's running a tad higher through the egg crate and used the other pipe to hold up the egg crate. This way it can't twist and fall down and is being held up so it can hold the pot scrubbies.

ALSO I'm not pro picture taker but it's hard to see what's going on here with the emergency overflow. There are two chambers in my overflow. The drain hole your looking at from this angle your thinking "he doesn't have any stand pipe coming out of that hole" which is true because that's an emergency overflow chamber. It's empty. The chamber wall inside is clear though so you can still see what's going on in the main overflow chamber.

The first picture is the T I used. This worked great except I'm not happy about having to have the pipe submerged ie: making myself able to back siphon in the random event the power goes out. I have the other intake right above the water and it's pressure is low enough to not show any problems being above water.

As for the back siphon, Drill a siphon break right below the water line on the T. That way if power goes out as soon as the water drops it will suck air. Use a 1/8" drill bit to drill the hole.

As for your overflow burp I can't really tell what's going on based on these pictures. I'm going to assume that the chamber is filling up then starts to go down the pipe. after it gets so far it creates a siphon then runs out of water and burps.

That's a good idea. I'll do that next time I have a drill available.

All I know is that when I move the pot scrubbys around I can get it to stop. Like it's silent now but move those bad boys around some and here comes the gas ie: the fart sound. :D

I tried to diagram what's going on in this picture for you.

Red lines are the pipes coming out of the bulkhead. I just shoved them into the bulk heads. As you can see one is a bit higher than the other. (the pvc I got for bigger hole was a little smaller so I had to shove it in the bulk head threads a bit to make it tight hense it's lower)

Yellow is the water level. At point A I cut a hole big enough for red pipe to fit through the egg crate so the egg crate couldn't just twist and fall down below. at point B there is no such hole cut so that pipe is stopping the egg crate from just sliding down. I believe the fart only comes from pipe #2 which is the lower one and bigger hole.
