GPH Too Strong For Tank [Sump Setup]

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I equal out the pipes and loose the egg crate and sponges it's still going to be a 5" drop and have the splash effect though. The one pipe isn't much higher than the other one.

You think it could be the pipe's heights being different? I didn't think of that. I could even them out but I still need the sponges to withdraw the splash effect. Maybe I could get some pvc to use at legs in the overflow to hold up the egg crate so it's all even?

Anyhow, I hooked her all up and immediately realized she had too much power for my simple setup. When plugged in the pump pushed the water out of the intake to the tank so hard it was blowing all the way down to the bottom of the tank and blasting sand like a leaf blower. My in tank overflow pushed water so fast it sounded like a waterfall.

What size plumbing are you using for the return? The smaller the diameter the higher the pressure. Also what size pump did you buy?

For a mag 12 or 18 use a minimum 1" Ø off the pump then tee off this with (2) 3/4" Ø lines to your returns. If you use loc line for your returns you could use their 3/4" wye for returns and that should reduce the pressure and give you plenty of circulation with little or no dead spots.

*** edit *** I did not read the second page when I responded. I see you have a mag9.5 and a mag2. Mebbe put them both on their own 3/4" Ø returns with wyes and your pressure problems should be solved.

Well the model 2 doesn't have a pressure issue. I have .5" plumbing on the mag 9.5. It's designed fomr 3/4" but meh' I had extra .5" so I used that. As far as the pressure issue, the T pipe solved it 100%.

I'm going to drill a 1/8 hole in the top right where it submerges like Mav recommended so I have a back siphon break and I'm also going to get some 17" pvc legs in the corners of the overflow so I don't have to have the egg crate all crooked and ghetto rigged, plus I'll be cutting the second pip stand pipe so that they are both even and hopefully this all solves my gulping sound.

10 4. I had to call in the tool man (Dad) for the drill so I'll have it done later today when he gets here and update you. :D

P.S. as far as now though, since I moved the sponges around a bunch yesterday the only sounds I get are occasional gulps. I'm not sure if it's the sponges touching the pipes sucking in, the pipes being two different heights (causing one to be slightly above water) or both, but with the legs under the egg crates and cutting the tubes I'll be knocking both possible issues out so we'll see.

Check out Chompers thread "Flood Proof and 100% Silent HOB Overflow"

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=214933

He uses airline in the tube to stop the gurgling, fairly easy i would assume.

My W/D Is actually Chomper's design. ;) I see what he's doing to prevent gurgling and it looks great except he never mentioned what in the world the contraption is that's on the end and holding the air line nor where to get such a thing. :(

EDIT: Actually he answers this on like page 8 or so. I guess it's just glued together plastic holding air line tubing in? I don't see how the air line wouldn't just fill with water and shoot straight up... None the less I already have this together so I can't exactly just take the tubing out for 48 hours to glue things to it so I've got to figure out maybe something else...

From the pic below it looks like a couple of slivers of Acrylic welded to a Disk of acrylic with a Hose barb glued into it. Then a Hose running down the pipe. I am sure you can run a piece of airline down your pipe and see if it works. Then come up with your own contraption to hold it in place.

PS: just found this in the thread.

The airline allows air and water to enter the pipe individually. The water then acts as a cap to keep in any noise.

The clear disk is held up by three feet that are first glued to the disk and then to the pipe. That hole in the disk is where the airline goes. Nothing is inside the pipe except for the airline (the feet for the disk are glued to the end of the pipe).

Okay. Got it all running dead silent. Here's what's going on.

Firstly, I drilled a 1/8 hole right in the T pipe right below water level for a back siphon guard. I stopped the pump and tested it and it worked like a charm. Props for the simple yet effective solution.

Now for the overflow. I cut both the pipes even but still had a gurgle. I got 4 pieces of 3/4 pvc cut 17" and set them in each corner of the overflow chamber. I drilled a hole in the bottom of each so water can flow through the hollow inside. They hold up the egg crate steady about an inch above the pipes. Put the sponges on the egg crate up to about an inch from the overflow slits and they break the water fall effect and work perfect.

I ran some air line down the pipes and ran the pump and it was dead silent. Works beautifully. I'm not all about making a fancy pipe tip that holds the air line. If I don't need to pull out the glue then why bother? I cut two 2.5' pieces of airline and ran them down the tubes through the egg crate and sponge and then put them in a slit at the top of the overflow facing the back of the tank and upwards. The slit holds them perfect. Lastly I put a piece of egg crate on the very top of the overflow which helps hold the air lining in the slit so that it can never pop out, and also prevents fishies from jumping into the overflow. (it's happened twice)

EDIT: DAMMIT! It was dead silent for about ten minutes and I randomly just started hearing a sound from the other room. Went in there and now it's gurgling again.

I'm not sure what happened before but I killed the 9.5 pump, let the tubes drain, and then started it back up and now it's silent again. Hmm....
