No kidding! I should not have taken those cold and flu pills with my dark roast coffee this morning. Someone mentioned grammodes fruitcake? That goes great with coffee right?

Here is a topic, were I may get yelled at or cursed at? I hope not, as I have never experianced any disrespect, nor given it, on this site. Ciclasoma sp. grammods. I believe some call it "Mexican Flag" Cichlid? I guess if you look close, there is some "green", white and red?? Honestly I think it is a silly name. I am sure there are other common names for it, anyone care to share those?? I am a biologist, which means squat, but I have never really favored common names, since many apply to more than one fish. Some work, like Oscars, and even "wolf Cichlid" for the dovii, which is a contributer to where I am going with all this. Again I prefer the use of the sceintific (taxonomic) name, but if we are going to use common names, should we not have better ones than some that we now use? In an article I once read, it stated that the grammodes, is like a smaller version of a dovii. If you look close, there are many similarities?? To get to the point, a dovii is commonly reffered to as "wolf" cichlid, and if the grammodes looks like a smaller dovii, would the name of "wolverine" cichlid be better than Mexican Flag Cichlid, or any other? Many of you may just have rolled your eyes. I am not a fan of Xmen or comics, but to me it sounds better, tougher? A wolverine and a wolf are not of the same Taxonomic Family, but of the same Order (Carnivore), so it kinda makes scense to me. Again, this may sound silly, but it has been in my head for a couple of years, and thought I would bring it up. By the way, nothing against the real Mexican flag. For those who have met me know that I am of Mexican descent. Any thoughts on this odd subject?

Call them whatever you want! That's the glory of common names...

I'm personally going to call grammodes fruitycakes, as it's the holidays and if I'm drunk enough and squint my grammodes looks like a small aquatic fruit cake.

Never even heard of the term Mexican Flag for a fish... Either i need to get out more or learn to read?? I rarely reffer to a Dovi as a Wolf cichlid.. Usually just a Dovi. And for the comics? I used to love them. Still have quite a few of the old Wolverine comics. LOL

Those are the ones that I've heard but still don't use. To me they are simply Grammodes or grammys.

As someone mentioned earlier it's really only the established cichlids that are getting their common names used routinely (JD's, Firemouths).

great topic by the way.

Yeah, Grammodes common name around here is Grammodes or Grammys, no one says mexican flag or sieve. And very few say wolf cichlid for Dovii, their common name seems to be just Dovii.

well the common names are a little easier for the non biologist. but i have never heard a grammode called a mexican flag cichlid. i heard grammy or grammode. alot of people use the scientific names to show off. doesnt make a difference. proof is when you are maintaining a good aquarium. proper water parameters and giving a proper diet.
