ive seen a lot of different freshwater tanks that had various types of gravel, and sand. what do you think is better or is it better to not use either ( ive seen a few tanks with neither in it) i have a 55 freshwater with a oscar. and i recently purchased a 150 gal and would like to try something other than gravel what do u think

What do you like the look of? Gravel gives tons of color choices. bare is easier to clean. Sand is difficult to keep clean (can't really vacuum the stuff) but looks killer.

well i kinda like the sand or bare look better only becaue ive used gravel for so long but dont u need either for bacteria to live??

I don't know, I vac my sand...differently than gravel, but I vac it when I do water changes...

Try bare first, then go from there...if you go sand the best price you can get is on "pool filter sand" from your pool supply...

Gravel is easy to clean. It doesn't get sucked up like sand. AND fish can forage on it easily. But... it looks fake often and some people don't like the look of red, green, pink or blue gravel. You can have plants I suppose.

Sand looks most natural and stunning. It is hard to clean (or so I have heard) without sucking it up and it can make the water cloudy for a few days. BUT it can house plants very well.

Bare looks unnatural but it is easy to clean and ich cannot hit more than once. Oscars pull up plants often but you didn't specify if you were moving him to the 150. I say go for sand or get brown gravel of varying shades for a nice natural look. If you want to try something new....

sand... sand! SAND! SAAAAND!! (inside joke)

tons of people around here do bare bottom tanks (going commando). The ben. bact. lives in the filter. Never had a problem with it. Think it looks lame though and have only done it on hospital and growout tanks i hide in the depth of my house.
