i Have 2 tanks with sand they are easy to clean. have 4 tanks with gravel also easy to clean just hides more dirt. 2 tanks bare bottom 1 for feeders and 1 as a hospital tank i would never keep fish in a bare bottom as fish seem happier in tanks with substrate. I prefer sand as i can run a net around it to keep it clean and then vac it when i do water changes. Gravel for some reason i cant get my wife away from it looks ok but seems to hold in alot more dirt.
Have you thought about going barebottom or a fine thin bed of sand with some larger clay pots filled with Flourite/Eco Complete for plants? I went to a guys house one time to buy some fish all his tanks were either bare bottom or had like 1/4-1/2" of sand and he kept all his plants confined to pots of plant substrate...you can take your plants out and move them around without damage to them...looks pretty cool and you can keep your tanks spotless. He also hid the pots with large rocks or behind driftwood
i say to use PFS. very natural looking. and if you have a leslies pool supply store.. go there and get there PFS very natural looking. i ll post pics soon
I have quite fine pale sand at the bottom of my tank, and must say I have had some major issues with it! Been given some advice on here about getting a powerhead to get more circulation going so that it doesn't get dirty so quickly.
Not sure if this helps, but thought I'd share...
I bought Tahitian Moon White sand for my 75g, and imo it looks killer. The downside which eventually led me to sell off the sand was that it was too hard to clean and vacuum off completely. I decided that I like gravel much better, for the ease of cleaning and simplicity, although still not as nice as the look of sand.
we have gravel, sand, and bb, i dont really find anyone harder to clean. sand isnt as easy but not hard either. If looks is a big deal like going in the middle of ur living room i would do sand, or natural color pebble gravel looks great too. both really nice looking with cichlids
