Gravel vs Sand???

I would choose sand, its alot easier to clean and looks fantastic. YOure not always looking at a bunch of poo either if youre doing youre WC regularly. Just get the coarser sand so it doesnt ruin youre filter.

Well unless regularly means daily your gonna be looking at poo. Maybe you can train the fish to only crap once a week. As far as sand being easier to clean well my opinion differs, hate the fact that ya suck up sand as your trying to "hover" the gravel vac just above the surface. Hoping the poo is just a bit lighter then the sand.:nilly:

ive had both i have pfs now and i will say i find it kind of hard to get the gravel vac to suck the poo off the top of the sand i love the look but it is just as much work as gravel to me

gravel.....i got some sandbalsting sand that is almost as lareg as gravel and cheaper then gravel so with that said maybe you get sand and gravel in one.

Collect the sand that comes out during gravel vaccing. If you run a python or something, just put a bucket in the sink to catch the sand & dump it back in the tank...

Gravel all the way

I also like sand, but I can't find the kind I want. It's been described as "white river sand." It works nicely in freshwater. Any thoughts on where to acquire such a substance?

I like sand but make sure its fairly coarse.

The play sand I got gave me nothing but problems. Very dusty. Dusty to the point where if a fish collided with the sand I'd see the aftermath for days. My filter even suffered damage from sucking up dust 24/7.

Personally I'd never use sand again but in my case, I used the wrong type. Despite my bad experience, I like the look of sand and I think it works well with many aquatic applications.

Best of luck and choose your sand wisely. ;)

I had the same problem with sand in one of my tanks. I loved the way it looked but the fish would stir it up and cause the water to be cloudy and then the filters would suck some of it up even with a short intake tube on them.

i love the sand i have in my tank. regular white sand/live sand. not hard to clean at all, yeah my fish kick it up quite a bit but doesnt get sucked in my filters and it settles right back down without having my tank cloudy. dont know why or how people have issues with it. i guess maybe depends on the size of the tank so that you filter flow doesnt keep it stirred up or how rowdy your fish are. i got some big and thick puffers always getting startled by something around and my sand stays at the bottom no matter how fast they dart at the bottom.
