Hey Mike, I got to go to the back room of the zoo today. I saw your beastly cichla. But I think I only saw three. I'm not a cichla expert, but I believe I saw the tem, occelaris and a ginormous cichla species in another tank which I'm assuming is a pinima.

How'd you get in the backroom Alden?? Lucky!! I was there the other day, and dayum those arapaima are getting big. I'd love to see the cichla. Can't wait til they're on display.

sad to see them go bro,but theyll be great in that giant tank!
get some pics of them in the exhibit!
wish i could see em in person, but im on the other side of the world...

I contacted Alex Saunders to see if I could volunteer there and possbily get some credit for my continued education as a teacher. I don't think volunteering there is gonna work out, but since I had established a working relationship with Mr. Saunders and other zoo staff, I was allowed to check it out.

Ok all it's not good news but it's news. I talked to Rick about how they were doing a couple of weeks ago. Unfourtinalty he lost the Occellaris the main sp he was looking for and 1 of the reasons why I did this donation. Apperantly it died of an unkown Myopathy at least this is all they could come up with after necropsy. The other news is the Largest Pinima tried to take the Tem down. Both are ok Rick and Alex saved the Tem apperently but after this discovery the Large Pinima was moved to another holidng tank and developed some sort of virus which was treated and it appears that it was saved. But the worse news is last of course. All of the Cichla will not be put on display for a while at least 8 months. Those of you that have seen the display can understand why! The enclouser is big but not that big. But the occupant's that are already in there are HUGE. I agree with Rick that it will take them some time to put on enough size to ensure there survival and this is what we all want. I am sure the feeding regimine there on now will bulk them up to size in the 8th month wait. I am sure no matter how long we have to wait it will be well worth it. I will see if he will let me make another visit to come check them out and see how there doing. I will get as many pictures as I can. And thank you you everyone that has responded. Lets all keep our fingers crossed and say a prayer for Rick. This has been something he has wanted to do for a very long time. If you have seen the Pacu in the main display he raised them from under 10'' and he has been trying to keep Cichla since this time as well. To give you an idea of the tme he has dedicated to this display and Conservation projects, the Pacu are now 3'+ and we all know what it takes to raise monsters. It's no easy task. So I am wishing him the best and praying that he is succesful. It would be mine and his dream come true to share the passion of C.R.E.A.M (Cichla) to the world. And just down right amazing to complete his main tank with the Lightning and the Thunder of CICHLA!
