Great Thread to show how a bio reactor works!!

Actually I think it could help with Nitrates. The moving media is less likely to collect detritus staying cleaner and as a result keeping nitrates lower. I know the main reason I have any Nitrates in my 150 is because my pot scrubbers collect so much detritus.

Maybe Trev can confirm my suspicions
Do you use any kind of filtering media prior to the scrubbies. On my overflow I have to foam filters the catch all particles prior to dumping into the sump. I have no issues with waste/particle build up in my scrubbies.

I see how it works but not sure I see how it's any better than a trickle filter? You still need to get water to the reactor (unless it's in-tank, of course) and now you haveta pump a slew of air into the system too.

Is it supposed to be better? Or just another alternative?

Not trying to pick a fight, just looking for info..

I thought the poster was asking if this would reduce nitrates as in a biological action...which it will not but I fully get your point about not having a clogged system which does contribute to nitrates....I think the clogging would just accumulate else where but you have a good point!:D

I have something like this in my diy sump bio tower, the bottom drawer of my tower has 4gls of bio balls so i thought it would be a good idea to move them around so I put a super luft pump on it with 2 5in round flat air stones to move the bio balls around I really do not know if it helps but why the hell not use stuff lying around and yes I get alot of movement

by trickle filter u mean wet dry?

the reason bio reactors are better is the amount of surface area for bacteria to grow in a smaller space.
