Great White Shark Approaching

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would flip out

First - the pic is real, it's a scientist in the kayak who is very aware of the shark.

Secondly, because of the angle of the shot, the shark is closer to the photographer, making it look even bigger than it is, but it's freakin' huge!

Lastly, if you don't shark fish, you may not be aware, but as a shark puts on length, they put on a huge amount of girth.

I thought it was fake for years until I read the article.

I don't want to go sea kayaking there in the first place.:eek3:
If I somehow ended up being there anyways...I'd be paddling away towards land as soon as I saw the shark coming in the distance.

First off, I wouldn't be in there if I didn't know what I was doing and secondly, anyone see any of the shows on the studies done on Great White's hunting behaviors? They usually take almost a verticle angle of attack from the bottom...they don't usually head towards something straight on like that if they know its food.

Or at least thats what the TV told me ;)

lol i'd edge my bets in my boat I think hoping that what tv told me was right, and that it would get bored and leave. Then again I don't think I'd have much choice as I would have just passed out at the sight of it.

But you have to realize that the shark can swim faster to you than you paddle toward land

If it was me, Id jsut freeze and hope it would go away and not attack

But then again, I dont even know how to swim, so kayaking is out of the picture :D

I go kyaking all the time up here off the coast of BC and now all I am going to think about is that damned picture... Thanks!

And thanks, cause the little kid in me just thought... COOL!!!!

but off the coast of BC the water is in dark color, its not clear as you seen in that picture, so if there was even a Great White swimming toward you, you wouldn't know, cause you can't see it :D

Yea, hmmm.... Even for someone like me, that would sorta suck. But then again, could be pretty cool too, considering its approach shows little to no defensive posturing - pectorals are somewhat questionable due to the angle of the pic, but also the approach is far different from a typical predatory display, so if I managed to stay still, it could be pretty cool to observe a white in such shallow waters. All in all though, I prefer not to place myself in a plastic floaty, on the surface, in the presence of these animals.

great white around that area have developed a technique that is unique and very effective at catching seals, they dive to a certain depth and come hauling ass out of the deep towards a seal, if prefectly executed the seal wont have time to react or get out of the way.

Scientist at first thought Whites only breach at seal Island off S. Africa, but have since proven that they will do it else where. I think I was watching "Air Jaws" or somesuch and they got they Whites to do it in Australia and California as well, although with FAR less frequency.

But yeah, after defecating in my swim shorts, I'd probably just keel over dead if I saw that comming at me! Granted the shark in the pic just looks inquisitive, but..........
