That goes back to the whole listenability thing. There are a bunch of guys out there doing really technically impressive stuff but with no semblence of melody. A lot of newer Death Metal is like that, I hear it and think "wow that guys pretty good", then I turn it off.
melody does not make music...some people just can't handle it and I understand, but that doesn't mean it's not great music. It's listenable, but you just have to give that type of music your full attention and listen to it multiple times to get it unless you are a musical genius and know music theory through and through like Colin does. to me, it's the most impressive music out there today and I absolutely love it.

anywhoo, i'll quit with my tangent. I reread and I missed the part where you said listenability, so I get it.

There are a lot of good guitar solos in hardcore punk, too.

Melody alone does not make music for sure.
I respect those full on technical players, I understand how talented they are but I'd rather see someone combine that talent with and equally important talent for making it more melodic. (ie Jari Maenpaa of Ensiferum and Wintersun) I love seeing super technical bands live, I just cant really get into it while driving around or lounging about.

I typed "Colin Marston" into youtube and listened to a few of his songs and tbh, they all sounded like garbage. Music is not all about how many notes you can shove into each beat, if it doesn't sound good then it is completely useless, you may as well be recording yourself slamming a metal trash can against a brick wall... I don't consider that impressive in any way, just a complete waste of time.

This is what I would call a musical genius:

btw, just so there's no confusion, the "two" people in the vid are both the same person playing two different parts.

And this was him when he was only 13-14 years old:

Solo at 2:50. All hail Iommi. :headbang2:headbang2This may be a little short and a bit crude but remember this was in 1970! Nobody said:
And he didn't even have all of his fingers![/COLOR] Anyone whos ever played any kind of hard rock guitar owes Tony Iommi everything.

I'm sure there are enough guitarists and metal heads here to argue a few of these, and there are certainly some I've forgotten but most of those were on purpose.

Correct me if im wrong, but i believe he had his fingertips cut off in a metal working factory.

also, zack wyld(sp?) played a great solo in the song "miracle man" with ozzy. ill do a little more research to find the song and solo. but yes, theres so many great solo's over time
