As far as snails I have four XXL-turbo snails and Im bumping it down to two. There simply isnt enough for all four to eat. I also have two sand snails that eat anything that lands on the sand. I would recommend around 8-12 astraea and a few sand snails. This should keep it nice and clean. If you want some variety swap a few astraea for a couple blue legged hermits. Im gonna be at a saw mill tomorrow and wont be able to respond till later, but let me know how it goes and we can go from there!
Good point here. I guess this is more of what I meant. Making as much random flow as possible. I personally would add another powerhead on the other side, but that is just me and definitely not necessary. I don't think flow is the main problem in your system.
You would be very surprised if you put 30 snails in your tank. You wouldn't think there were that many in there. I would revise what I said and say up to 1 per gallon. I think Cal has it right here when he recommends about 15 inverts total, I would just bump that number a bit to 20 total or so. I also would do an assortment of snails and hermits. The hermits eat off the rock more and the snails the glass(snails get the rock some too).
The flakes have more waste by weight than pellets. A higher percentage of the flake food is useless to fish and will just be passed through into the water. The flakes are also not a very nutritious diet and should not be the only thing you feed. I would recommend a variety for feeding. A good assortment would be, mostly New Life Spectrum pellets, and some frozen food like Mysis shrimp(no brine shrimp) and your current flakes. It will help a lot to keep your fish healthy.
