Hello skooby ,
Congrats on your new dempsey's. I believe I've answered this question before, but to clear things up for you (YES) JD's can have a successful Spawn between 2 1/2 - 3". They start to spangle right around 3", but I can't tell you if you'll have a successful spawn or if your male is fertile or not yet. Only time will tell & most first spawns (Fail) either because the male isn't ready or the female doesn't fan the eggs properly. Only thing I can tell you if you want them to spawn is to prep the tank for them if this spawn fails. Put in a couple of 8" ceramic pots & a slate rock if you want & they'll try again.

Good luck

-Jill ;)

It's my understanding that BG JDs look same as wild type JDs, so you wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at it, correct?

Hey Skooby,
Unless you bought him as a BGJD or produced him from an EBJD parent, I would say almost certainly no.

J0ker,
You're right, BGJDs look identical to wild-type JDs, so you can't tell the difference just by looking at them. There's a quasi-unsubstantiated rumour that BGJDs have a slight magenta cast to their underlying grey body colour, but I haven't been able to raise any to make this observation myself and compare them to the wild-type parents. Regardless, this would be a very subtle difference, only apparent to the trained eye. Given the variance in lighting and colour fixing that can happen to photos, it's definitely an assessment that should only be made in person. Can anyone who has produced a BGJD x BGJD spawn confirm this magenta cast? Fry from a BGJD x BGJD spawn should be 25% blue, 50% BGJD and 25% WTJD, so the magenta should be present in 2/3 of the dark babies.

Jill,
Great progress! Always look forward to checking your updates. I think you've got quite the following here, so periodic updates will be much appreciated by the masses, however frequent you're able to make them. :D

Cheers,
