Green Terror and Jack Dempsy owners

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's easy to generalize, but each individual fish have their own temp. My JD (about 3-4 years old) is a total pushover and I haven't had my GT long enough to tell you otherwise but he seems okay as well. They are both in the same tank (75 gallon), with some clown loaches and a gold nugget pleco.

My opinion is purely about owning GT's as i dont like the look of JDs and therefore have never kept one.
ive found with GT's that there are no set rules. each fish has its individual traits and no one here can really give you any more advice than that. judge each fish on its own merits as with most cichlids.
they can range from gentle giants to absolute psychotics that will murder fish as fast as you can put them in.

thanks for the replies....klinda just seconds what i was thinking. Looking to upgrade later this years, might try a JD, my big oscar is pretty good with small fish....just added a 2 inch blue acra and he is doing fine, my o never pays him any attention but i also added a 3-4 inch choclate and hes is always in hidding both my O and severum both hassle him a bit, he seems quite timid. Both fish have been in the tank for 3 or 4 weeks

Definitely an individual thing. My Jd was 10 inches when I introduced an inch long Oscar. Not only did he not kill him, he protected him from the other fish. Mine seems pretty smart and caring, he's the sensitive type. By the way him and the Oscar are still tight.

My O can be a bit bossy....as long as the other fish sty out of his way every thing is fine. My black ghost knife is around 10+ inch now and am a bit worried about a JD beating him up once the JD is fully grown. I just had to get rid of my synodonist catfish cause he kept beating up my ghost knife and stealing his hiding spot.

They are aggressive fish, but not that aggressive. Similar temperament to the oscars. They have tiny mouths and dont really do major damage like larger, meaner, tougher more bad a'ed cichlids

Depends on the individual fish. Ive owned both sides of the spectrum of both species.

So far my green terror is pretty timid. I've got him with a green severum and a german blue ram. I love the ram by the way!

i just bought a 8'' green terror last week. he is not aggressive at all in my tank:

120 gallon -
5 X 6'' silver dollars
1 X 8'' senegalus
1 X 8'' palmas polli
1 X 8'' L-152 Pineapple
1 X 5'' red tail shark
1 X 8'' flag tail

However, the previous owner sold him to me because he was to aggressive! her tank was a 110 gallon which consisted of a many other SA/CA cichlids. with that said; i think a lot has to do with tank mates and overall environment. also, each fish has its own personality.

it's all about individual experience and it will vary no matter what you do . . . when I kept both in a 90G tank, my experience was that the GT picked on every fish except the JD, and the JD was friendly with very fish except the GT

I eventually had to trade in the GT to the LFS, because it was getting abused by the JD too much . . . but the JD was always peaceful after that . . .
