Green Terror compatibility, 55 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well said.

yeah i guess tank size starts lots of drama these days lol, the reason why i asked in the first place is because 2 popular sites said 60 gallons for green terror and 5 gallons is not a difference, they must of went by female green terror then

I like your firemouth idea, great fish perfectly suited for a 55g. And you could add a couple tankmates. Small plecs maybe like bristlenose or bulldogs.

i'm getting a 36lx28dx24h soon, looking to way over filter with a 80 gallon sump/breeder and plant section for some extra filtration. all in the works. i can only hope my gt looks as nice as yours i have a feeling it is a gold suam or just a pretty female which would be fine couple weeks to wait before i can be sure as it could just be getting used to my grow out but it has such nice spotting and beard. your plants are live right?

It's not so much the capacity of the aquarium, but rather the dimensions that do not make a 55 gallon ideal for a male GT. The 60 they are referring too may be 18" deep for all I know, but that's why much of the information given on many of these sites should be taken with a grain of salt. MFK is a much better source of information where you can get it directly from the source--experienced fish keepers that have kept many of these fish. Nobody was attacking your "friend" on a personal level, it was just being stated that he was giving wrong information, and that's really a big no-no on a public forum where this information will be stored for years to come, if not forever. If we see BS being posted, we're going to call it out, as we should.

Nah, just a feeble attempt to be funny :D

To the OP - arguments can get heated from time to time, but it's a good thing, as they filter out wrong information so this forum can better serve all the users, including you. I don't always know how to say things nicely, but maybe the well being of fish is more important than not getting our feelings hurt.

I am sorry you are being harassed and pushed around, there are so many people on forums who like to be the "best" and the "smartest" and so many that like to put down someone's opinion and/or experience. you are my friend, i am going to defend you, and it was pretty rude of them to put you down and use the "coo-coo" smilies, i hate it when someone acts like the best and smartest and picks on new users to try and prove they are the "best" and when they may think everyone is "inexperienced" and "stupid" they are wrong. everyone has their own experience and source of information, don't let anyone put you down. and i was not going to put a keyhole in my 55 gallon aquarium i picked up today, i don't even like them, they do not look like the best color, so i don't want a keyhole. and if aggression will be a problem, i'll probably just get a couple firemouths and a couple of convicts.

Thanks man, the firemouth/convict idea sounds great...let us know what you finally decide

If you like the idea of GT so much, why not keep blue acara? Much smaller than a GT and very similar coloration. They are usually peaceful, will be a lot easier to choose tank mates too. A Blue Acara, school of larger tetra such as red eye tetra, some cory cats, and 1-2 small-medium size pleco such as bristle nose or golden nugget, in my opinion will make a very interesting tank.

Technically the GT will " fit" in a 55 or 60 for life so the site isn't wrong, just a bit misguided. Can it be done? Absolutely. Should it be done. Speaking from experience, I'd say no.

I tried a mixed community in my 90. All 2" fish. Jd, firemouth, GT, Midas. It was basically my growout tank for their future home in the 300. Eventually, the GT was a nightmare in the big tank so I put the GT, firemouth and convict on the 90 with 6 serpae tetras(as targets or food) and that didn't work either. Tons of cover, wood, plants, caves galore. The firemouth and con got chased relentlessly for about 2 weeks. Put her(GT) in isolation for a week then reintroduced. Still didn't work. 90 gallons was not big enough for the gt unless she was to be alone. Unfortunately, you just don't know till they grow a bit. Most fish seen in stores are juvies and haven't developed much attitude. Once they hit 4-5" things get....... interesting.

Saum grow very slowly so a 55 would actually work well for awhile but eventually the fish will need at least a 75. You'd probably have a year or so before it would become apparent.....
