I have wild caught Panamanian G.T.s in an outdoor tank, they feed from the surface anytime an insect hits the water, naturally.
Not casting aspertions, but crystal clear, has nothing to do with the actual water quality.
It can be crystal clear, and be chemically toxic, acutely from ammonia, or chronically from high nitrate.
It can also be mud brown, and be perfectly healthy.
The only simple and available way to know for sure, is by testing for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, looking good isn't always accurate.
An occasional flash is normal, just like we scratch an itch, but regular flashing could be anything from the disease ick, to high ammonia or even excess nitrate.
