Hi people! I got hold of a 4ft 55 gallon tank. I know, I know, it's not huge but, oh my, it's huge for me! Ive done fish less cycling for 3 weeks and now I have 0,0,~5 I have plants in the tank.

I have done SOME research and decided that I want a green terror! These guys are so cool looking and the fact that their personalities varies from fish to fish makes me want them even more! But since these guys are so 'aggressive but might be fine' I wanna do as much research as possible as I don't want any deaths!

The real question is what ditfer fish would go with a GT and a Senegal bichir? I don't like silver dollars, and rainbows. The tank will be their home for at least 2 years, so prefebly fish that won't outgrow the tank. Lastly, I would want them to be small enough to have many, but big enough to not be eaten by the bichir :) I hear that 'bigger tetras' are fine, but no one ever defines what they mean by that.

Any suggestions are welcome, but bare in mind that I am not rich (from spending the money on the fishtank plus the price of GT and bichir will really set me back) and I would prefere to get some easily accessible fish :)

Lastly, is it better to introduce all the fish before the GT or it doesn't matter what order I introduce them?

thank you in advance! :D

Do you want top swimmers or bottom dwellers? Because there are tons of differs that we can recommend but it helps more to know what your mosr interested in.

Try tiger barbs or giant danois. I heard they work great for a dither fish. You could try maybe sword tails or mollies if you get them big, or the GT is a baby and the GTs are some of the slowest growing cichlids so larger mollies could work, and they are live bearers so they could supply a snack for the GT. Well I am not an expert on the bichir so I don't know. So good luck! I am planning on getting a GT and a convict for my 55 I am cycling

When I had my GT it was a ***** to my pike who was twice her size lol. But if you're looking for tetras or something that won't get eaten I would say some buenos ares tetras would work fine. My GT was very territorial so make sure you have hiding places. I don't think it would matter who you put in first. But I would get a school of like 6-8 buenos ares. Hope this helps.

Oh and I would introduce the "dithers" first when they are large, and then put the GT when it is a baby. And make sure to provide a lot of cover, such as rock caves. So the GT can have a hiding spot so he/she is not stressed the first week.

woow! Thank you for the fast replies! So:

i would prefere top swimmers? From YouTube videos I watched the GTs stay in the mid to lower part of the fishtank so I would like something that will stay at the top.

giant danios, hmm I saw them in the lfs this morning and thought they looked cool, but weren't really to my liking. Tiger barbs look really cool, but I read that GT can happily eat them? And do they grow as slow as the GT or faster?

Live bearers sound interesting as they will provide some free food plus they are REALLY cheap, I mean really cheap they are like £3 for 2. BUT, they are usually really colourful and would distract the view from the GT, and I want a big king of the tank effect.

Buenos ayres tetras are more to my liking as they are dull yet still cool looking, BUT, they are very small, surely they would make a nice snack for the bichir and the GT?

I keep tiger barbs with my JD's, they get along fine. My tip would be get the GT first let it get accustomed to its new tank( a few day at least ) then before you add the little friends just rearranged your tank, this helps the new fish because then everyone is looking for a new home.

Live bearers are pretty slow. Tigers barbs are pretty fast and nippy, they can hold their own. GT grow slowly. I think they'd be fine, or at least your best bet. I'd get a nice school of 8-12 though.
