This. Tiger barbs are also pigs so food competition is probably pretty high.

Gts do grow slower than Amphs or Jags but clean water is the best way to stimulate growth.

As I said, cichlid growth rate is proportional to their ultimate size. Amphs and Jags can reach 16 in, GT only 10 in, so you should expect GT to grow 1/3 slower.

viejefish, I wasn't complaining at all. I do enjoy watching fish grow and mature. Just wondering if it was a normal growth rate. I've owned severums who reached almost there full size in roughly a year and half.

I normally do 30percent water changes every one -two weeks, been feeding him brine shrimp and spirulina/veggie flakes. Again I'm not complaing nor upset with his growth just wondering if it was normal. thanks

If your Severums can hit full size in 1.5 year, you must be feeding them a lot. Most large cichlids don't hit full size until 3 year or older, 80% full size in 2 years, and 50% full size and ripe to breed in the first year. So 4 to 5 inch GT in one year is normal, assuming that you feed them normally twice a day and do regular WC.

I got about 1 inch per 3 months out of my GT. He was 6" at the 18 month point.

I was doing a single 75% water change per week in a 55 gallon tank and feeding only NLS thera +a twice per day. Once he was 6", he needed a bigger tank based on his activity level...

I'd say your growth rate is pretty standard. Keep up the good work. In another year, he'll be 8+" and a beast.

Every time I breed and raise GT fry i forget how long it takes them to grow. I bred my GT's last fall its prob been atleast ten to eleven months from egg to where some of the alpha males I have are around 5 inches at the moment. The only way I have been able to get them really to put on serious fast size is if you are to dedicate a fairly large tank to one or two of them have great filtration and lots of water changes with plenty of feedings.

in my experiance with gt (gold saum type) they are slow growers. it took mine almost 2 years to get 8 inches. You can see the over all growth over a 2 year period in my singature (Jag) :)
