You dont have to buy adults just buy that r around 2-3 in and they r hardy cuz i have a pair right now. And i dont like buying a bunch of juveniles thats y i always buy a male and female. I dunno y but i can tell a male and female in any CA/SA cichlid. Even in oscars i bought a pair and i went home started venting them and there was a male and female. I dunno how i do this but every time i get a male and female for sure. Here's a link to my thread.
The first 3 pics is a female and last one is male. Look at the coloration of female ( dark ) and male ( color ). And they both r around 2.5 in. Hope this helps

Even at the 2-3in size will they start to show a hump? or should i just go for the most brightly colored fish to assure it will be a male?

Some will but the brighter ones r male and dark ones r females. Most of the time Females have dark greenish pectoral fins and males have orange pectorals.

My female is almost as colorful as a male. She is about 4in. and she has a slight bump on her head. I did get her from a respectable breeder thinking it was a male, but it turned out to be female with pointy fins. Usually the body shape will give the sex away.
Unfortuanatly im having the white stringy poop problem and she wont eat. Ive tried a QT tank with treatment and it helped a little but she is still not eating. This does seem rather common for the GT. I just dont like it because she hasnt grown in about 2 months. Check out my video, GT makes a small appearance. I really need to treat my whole tank for internal parasites, Ughhhhh i hate it. Just a buy a big one and avoid this headache haha. I have other videos on my youtube of when she was younger and feistier.

So far my GT has grown at a steady rate. No stringy poo yet. He eats like a horse and is very mean. But not mean enough or big enough to go in with my other cichlids yet. Hopefully he will be able to join the others in a few more months. I hope he doesn't turn out to be young and sickly like so many other GTs that I have heard of.

Id really like to get one young and watch him grow. Convicts94 im still failing to see the difference between the two, can you point out at a certain time in the video where like the male would be on left female on right or vice-versa?

Iv seen soo many people have trouble with them. I have a male at 8 inches and hes good one week and then stubborn the next. Hes had white poo before but seemed to fight through it. I lost 3 or 4 gt's to the white poo thing, they get it really easy. My big guy is in a 130g tank by himself and all he does is sit there, its sooo boring.
