everybody for the last time there babies and once i find a pair within the four fish im getting rid of the other 2. that means there is only 2 fish in the 20 gallon for awhile until i get them a bigger tank!

You need a bigger thank!!!

just kidding

I think we understand what you want, but you just don't have the right equipment right now.

Juvenile Green terrors grow pretty slowly and they will not 'pair up' at 2 inches. They will need lots of time to grow and mature before they are sexually mature. I'd say close to a year if they are only 2 inches. I have 5 right now in a 75g, and the biggest is about 5 inches. Still no sign of 'pairing up'.

Although jack dempseys probably mature faster, they will need to be atleast 4-5 inches before they pair up. That means you have to keep all of them until they get atleast that size and that's just not going to happen in a 20g.

Be patient. You will be more satisfied in the long run if you do this the right way.

All that being said, I think either would be a good choice. Dempseys and Terrors are both awesome fish.

There's no need to rush into this if you are getting your stock from Petsmart. They usually keep GTs and JDs as a staple cichlid. Wait until you get a bigger tank. get a little school of tetras and barbs if you want to grow something in the 20. Then when you set up your bigger tank you will already have established dithers.

ya i guess ill wait until i have the bigger fish tank ready for them but in the mean time what do you think i should breed in the 20 gallon. I was thinking angelfish.

angelfish still aren't a good choice, as they will also outgrow a 20G tank . . . they get up to the 6"+ range

if you must try to breed something now, I suggest convicts. personally, I don't like convicts in anything smaller than a 20G long, but I am sure you could make it work in a 20G high . . .

there might be some violence, but that is a risk you run when breeding CA cichlids

ok, then maybe some kind of dwarf cichlid . . . german rams or laetacara come to mind . . . and they won't outgrow the tank

maybye but petsmart near my place sells almost nothing now. They only have like 15 small tanks and thats it.

i have 2 clown plecos in the tank now.

This is perfect for you. Ask Petsmart to order them for you. They will. You have to learn a little patience when dealing with cichlids especially breeding cichlids. You will never be able to keep everything you see. There will always be tank limitations, difficult water parameters, and limited species availability. Forcing your will to get a stock that you can't house will make you and your fish miserable.
