it all hooks together in a nice lil package put in the tank then plug in and go

this is completely 100% false. most algae problem take place in planted tanks. especially when you start messing with intense lighting, co2, and nutrients. when everything is balanced, no algae will be present. if something is out of whack between your lighting/co2/ferts, you will get algae. more plants will not take care of the problem.

and most of the time the problem is not enough ferts and/or too much light and/or not enough co2
