thats a lil extreme isnt it?lol
you can just leave the lights off
no need to blanket or stop feeding
the light from the room isnt going to do that much
still light feed
still do a w/c or a few
:)

No it is not extreme...It is a blackout...It works.....

ya i just did a 50% change and now ill keep the light off... then go black out. thanks.... petsmart..... hows it working on ur 240g?

I had this happen to my 90 gal. I did large water changes every 3rd day and used a lil algicide. I was under the assumption it was water bourn algea. Worked very well in my case.

I think i have waiting a little to long to change the water.... Old drift wood i thought was done leaching now it sat out for a year and leaching again.... i know this is killing light to the plants. any other problems?

That tank brings back memories of when I was a kid.

Vacuum that gravel as it might be filthy and thus your tank is a phosphate tank.

Water change which you did is great but siphon the water from the gravel clean that gravel .

You don't need uv,etc just clean that gravel and keep it clean

my buddy had that floating algea and he just bought some kind of algea tablets ( not sure which kind ) but they cleared his tank up in a couple days. im also not sure if they would kill live plants so read the package if you decide to use a product. i assume it would kill the plants but i could be wrong.

The lights are off.. but should i add a filter? the tank just runs off the plants.... which i dont thnk worked this time around... was fine tell the peace of wood was added. Ill just get a UV from petsmart for that cheap e who cares.

I had green algae as well when I first set up my big tank. I tried covering the tank for a couple of weeks but I couldn't seem to kill all of the algae. It looked okay at first, just a hint of green, but it all came back again (grew like crazy). I ended up using a UV sterilizer and it cured the problem in 1 day. It is also good for killing ich in the tank so I recommend using a UV. Big water changes is also a really good idea. And eliminate any sunlight that may be hitting the tank at any time of the day (I needed new blinds).

lol, my tank was like this for a month. i did three 75 percent water change evey four days. today i got tired of dealing with with it and did a 100%, cleaned the filters, and took out my black sand. So far so good. check out my link http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=185961

I think its the substrate that making it green. my suggestion is empty it and clean it all up.
