Ya, have you never heard of the skippy filter? the bacteria that are in there turn all the waste into minerals which will appear as sand. When you wash it, it removes the bacteria and then they have to re-colonize. It will take eh, maybe 50 years for there to be too much sand, you guna have your pond up that long? lol

barly produces benificial bacteria, and read the skippy website, the didn't clean it for 10 years and wen they did it made green algae, you just have to have media that duznt clog, like rope
 
Actually barley straw contain elements that produce a natural algacide used in ponds. It is not intended for biological. Problem is you need a lot of it. Hence, they now have it in tablet form and even liquid. If you want to try barley straws let me know because I have a lot of barley bales (12" x 12" x 1") stored somewhere.
