Does anyone have a good regiment to maximize growth for Discus. I feed bloodworms about 4 times a day. I've also heard anecdotally that having a bare-bottom tank helps, although that's not really something I want to do. Anyone else have some tips for growing out these fish?

Feed 4-6 times a day, maintain the best water conditions you can, aim for 30-40% water change a day:)

If you want to grow them out quickly and to their max size, then you MUST go bare bottom. You also MUST do daily water changes. You MUST feed a high quality food, like a beefheart mix. Bloodworms alone wont cut it. If you feed a lot, but dont do daily water changes and still have a gravel bottom, it wont work. That is a recipe for disaster. Consistency is key to grow out excellent quality fish. It is by no means easy...that is why high quality discus are so expensive.

vita-chem. buy it and use it with every feeding and add it to the water. its like steroids for fish. my old s.d. grew like crazy with that in comparison to the last ones i had.

Make your own food it will cost a fortune with commercial:

Just looked for the link where I posted this before but can't find it.

Get a heart, trim all the veins skin if you can call it that, tubes etc. mix it up in a blender, add 12oz spinach, 1 banana, a hand full of high protein pellets, another hand full of flake(binder), 5 or six crushed multi vitamins, 6 or so cloves of garlic, a couple of spriluna tabs and a sprinkling of prapika and your good to go :D

so do you just feed it to them just like that?

Right now I do about 3 30% water changes a week which keeps the nitrates down to about 20 ppm, will that unduly stunt their growth. That is mainly what I am concerned about, I don't care if they grow to the absolute maximum possible size a discus can attain, but I know they are easy to stunt.

PS: Thanks for the recipe! Do you then cube it and freeze it like the commercial mixtures, or just refrigerate it and use it before it starts to spoil?

the problem with bloodworms is that they are low in protein. It's like eating only candy. A meaty diet is great. Blackworms and earthworms would be perfect, as well as chopped market shrimp and beefheart. Quality pellets are your best staple food though

Not ignoring other posts, just this one seemed the best to quote;)

Blend it all together and freeze it. This is the trick, very thin slabs or it's a pain to break. The thinner the better, break some off and leave it for a minute to thaw a bit, then it will stick to the glass while the fish eat it, with a good press against the tank glass not much will sink to the bottom where they are less likely to feed:)
