Grow out Discus fast

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
to 3" by about 4 months, 4-5" by 7 months......full growth by 1 year .......they continue a little after, but more thickening...........Of course many things can change this................there's a 'contest" for growing out discus over at simply discus, check out the photos.........

if gravel is a no no in a grow out tank, what about pool filter sand but with a underwater pump to keep stuff of the bottom??

The purpose of a grow out tank is to feed as much food as possible and change as much water as possible. Gravel traps detritus, pool sand some people complain is hard to vacuum, hence the popularity of bare bottom. My suggestion is be true to your commitment level, if you're going to be diligent and always vaccum your substrate every day you can do whatever you like. Most people just want to do it the easiest and fastest way...then gravel is not a good idea so either sand or bare bottom for most.

do more more water changes, go to barebottom or you wont get the best discus you can

go over to simplydiscus and look around a bit

A thin layer of heavy grain sand or Pfs isn't going to +/- n03 with enough flow. I do agree with you though as far as gravel or waste traps. Bare bottom is definitely easiest and quickest option, but my tanks are for show, not breeding, selling or stocking. I've had both and a little sand looks better sometimes

Anyone realize this thread has been dead for over 4 years?

I posted in this thread as that's how forums should work. It would then keep all relevant info together.

My discus are on day 2 of the eggs being laid, hopefully they should hatch tomorrow ;-)
