Right now I do about 3 30% water changes a week which keeps the nitrates down to about 20 ppm, will that unduly stunt their growth. That is mainly what I am concerned about, I don't care if they grow to the absolute maximum possible size a discus can attain, but I know they are easy to stunt.

do more more water changes, go to barebottom or you wont get the best discus you can

go over to simplydiscus and look around a bit

what does a bare bottom do for discus

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's just a matter of cleanliness. The discus are extremely sensitive to nitrates and other pollutants, and it's just much easier to keep the water as clean as they prefer without gravel trapping little bits of food and waste which is bound to happen to some extent no matter how many water changes you do.

In a nutshell, meaty foods create a shed load of waste, by removing the waste load from the tank, creates the best water conditions hence the extreme water changes. With a bare bottom tank it's make removing the waste so easy, substrate is a pain for this, bare bottom is a piece of urine when it comes to removing this.

Lots of changes means no waste in a bare bottom, and more feed going in = bigger discus:D

can that same idea be applied to other fish also.

I went through a phase of keeping all tanks bare bottom just for ease of maintenance, a practice I have since abandoned, it was so easy to grow out fish bare bottom but in the end all you see is a dull tank IMO. If you have the space and tanks then why not it does work well:)

Make your own food it will cost a fortune with commercial:

Just looked for the link where I posted this before but can't find it.

Get a heart, trim all the veins skin if you can call it that, tubes etc. mix it up in a blender, add 12oz spinach, 1 banana, a hand full of high protein pellets, another hand full of flake(binder), 5 or six crushed multi vitamins, 6 or so cloves of garlic, a couple of spriluna tabs and a sprinkling of prapika and your good to go :D

really like this, try out when i can
but i got a newby question, what's the growth rate for the discus ??
considering feed them with this mix, bloodworms, artemias and commercial food ?
