growing plants in hang on filters?

can i grow plants in hang on filters? will they filter the water?

anyone with experience?:headbang2
 
I'm not sure if you can or not but they would need a light source.

I`ve seen a number of filters with "lucky bamboo" sticking out of them.
Best guess, they have little or no effect other than looking a bit wierd.
 
Java moss has a tendency to colonize filters, so does duckweed, but non-floating plants have a tendancy to clog filters. I have java ferns that go into mine, but i have to clean them out otherwise they can stick the impellers. If you're looking to filter the water with plants I would suggest getting some pumps and a relay-plunger shutoff and make a vegetative filter in a refugium-type thing or a sump
 
You could easily grow some pothos in your HOB with the roots submerged... I would guess it would actually lower your nitrates. Pothos are HUNGRY! Wouldn't need much of a light source either--that's why they make good house plants.
