  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've read that lucky bamboo will help with nitrates and seen ppl use a bunch in a pond as a filter to keep it as natural as possible

yes I have that and lucky bamboo in most of my filters

It does lower nitrates since my nitrates are lower than they used to be and my stocking is the same. I imagine everything else is the same as well.

only thing is when i added live plants to my tank, and decided to remove them i had a break out of brown algae. and its been driving me aboslutely insane ive done tons of water changes

Yes that will, I grow all kinds of house plants in my tanks. A piece of advice though, do not grow pothos in a filter or it will kill your filter in very short order. The roots grow quickly and will get into the impeller chamber of most filters. (save a filter, kill a nitrate) Just let the roots grow submerged in the water and the plant above the water line. Pothos need no soil or substrate to take root into.

Yeah, I have a grow out I added some plants too. Didn't really care how it looked. Dang the plants grow good in there. I don't even use the light on the tank I just use the sun coming in from the window. The tank started leaking so I spent last weekend ripping the tank apart and resealing and now it's back with the goonch. The little plant holders are from www.RipariumSupply.com they have suction cups to attach to the glass and they work great!
Check out the pics and check out my goonch thread in the catfish area :D

Sorry for the derail but that goonch smile is to die for lol... The plants look like they are doing great without light. I do not use light either, just window light. I'm sure you couldn't imagine having those roots in an HOB could you?

Good question (looking for another pic) The roots were cut back and I removed 75% of the plants when I drained and re-sealed the tank. The end near the window was a knot of roots, it was unbelievable. I actually turned the tank around so the pump intake was away from the window to keep the roots out of the filter LOL it was that bad/good. Crap I can't fine anything that would show you the roots. No way would that work with a HOB filter. But the roots looked cool and you can have the plant part above the hood in the sunlight and the roots inside the tank. Awesome filtration too!
