You need to also factor in how old the largest of these species are found at as well. Also need to figure out if those are average sizes or 1 out of _____ many that reached that size.

This is a point I've mentioned before as well.

Just because a few *giants* are caught in the wild doesn't mean every single specimen of said species will reach that size.

I think the key words here are UP TO. There are so many factors that can come into play. Maybe one fish bred with a midget, oh sorry little fish.

Do you really think the largest of each species are ever even caught?

Point goes back to another thread about Odoe. According to sites and books they reach 27 inches in the wild and only to a foot in captivity. Yet, people are stating that it is cruel to keep one in a 180 gallon tank. That I don't understand. For that matter I would really like a pic of even a wild Odoe that big.
As far as my measurements for wild caught Cuda I have read they reach 2 feet-this was stated by many sites-However, the site itself could be badly misinformed.
Quick note on the CK had a visit on the CK board and Benjamin mentioned they usually attain 18-24 inches in captivity.

Great point factors such as tank size, food, and even dominance factor in how large a fish can get.

IF my Clown knife topped out at 24 inches I would wonder what I was doing wrong. I wouldn't sit here and try to justify what's going on by saying that they only get 1/2 as big in captivity as they do in the wild..... Obviously something is NOT right.

Nothing is really a certainty. It's just a theory. Each species is a case by case to me at least, as to guessing why max sizes aren't seen in aquariums regularly. Whether it's age, water nutrients, poor genetics, inbreeding(for farm bred fish), etc.

Moving this just to other monsters as I don't think with talk of CK's it's directly characin related.

We never said it's cruel to keep one in a 180. we said it'd be cruel to keep a shoal of them in a 180. come on now...

DB Junkie-the 18-24 inches was stated by a moderator on the CK thread-I guess you know more than him!! BTW could you post a pic of your CK!!
