does anybody know how long it will take red terrors to hit 4 inches if theyre 1 inch currently????

This will be interesting to see.

I say youll have a 4+ inch festae by end of summer 2011 ONLY if you do 50% water changes twice a week, keep the tank at 82 degrees and make market shrimp their staple diet...if you dont do that, it wont make 4 inches. Dice the shrimp into small pieces if they are an inch or under.

Also, 4 of them in a 10g wont last 2 months. They will kill each other until only 1 is left. I gave about 20+ fry under an inch (I believe) to a member on here that kept them in a 20 long and they killed each other off quickly...down to one dominant male.

omg that is a long time i thot mayb 4 months to reach 4 inches... till the summer thats a really long time maybe i should get a 30 gallon tank for them in a month or two do you think it will make a difference

no, i think if they dont have a 55+ soon (or something smaller with TONS of PVC & fake plants), they will kill each other off. I dont think the tank size matters as much for their growth as much as for aggression, as long as you keep it warm, do water changes often (2x a week) and feed them high protein.

The member I gave fry to on here had a 3-4 inch male after almost a year, and she does weekly water changes and has a "miracle tank" or something. All her fish grow super fast in her tank...all except the festae. We got several different species of fry (carpintis) at the same time from a vendor on here and all hers were double the size of mine in the same time period.

well i think your right about the aggressionthere are 2 that are bigger then the other 2. but fishguts says they grow faster than you told me?? im still a little unsure though?

Also, this is just my experience over the past 8 years with about 15 different adults and hundreds & hundreds of fry.

Apparently others dont have a problem with growth. Maybe its my water...although I had regular or better results in the same water with all my other cichlids.

well ill just have to wait are they like extremely aggressive when they get bigger??? and what is the max size they will reach

Mayans are often labeled as Red Terrors, that's why I asked. Aggression levels even in fry with these fish can be high. A 10 gallon tank is far too small even for fry. There will come a point where you will have only one left. Festae, Red Devils, Dovii, Midas and some others of the Parachromis family are extremely aggressive and often times very intolerant of tank mates. My friend has a female Festae in a 90 gallon tank alone because she's killed anything he's put in the tank with her or beat it to near death.

IME, they are extremely conspecific aggressive as fry, less aggressive from about 3-8 inches or so in a community, maybe bigger if kept without opposite sex ...but when they are bigger than 6+ inches in a pair and spawn, they are murderous. When mine spawned & the eggs hatched, they killed 13 large (4-6") fish in one night while I was sleeping. Wiped out the whole tank basically (a 265g tank)...everyone except my syno and he was clinging to life hiding. I had to rehome him.

Everyones had different experiences with them solo, but I think everyones experience with larger ones spawning and having tankmates has been the same...Extremely aggressive and not easy on the tankmates.
