Growthrate and max size- Marbles vs Motoro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IMO. Anybody that is into rays should know it's disc diameter and not overall length when measuring.

I would tend to agree but if you look at this post, it talks about a 40" motoro but talks about length of the fish. Still a large disc but not 40" there...

And their have been study's by professionals on marbles and they are just a morph or a different species of motoro .

Here is a photo of proof 40" motoro caught by a fisherman. Theirs always a bigger fish too . Wouldn't be surprised if theirs a 50" motoro . Remember this is only rod and reel . It's not easy to catch big trophy fish

I've had my female around 5 years and she would be around 22-24" and has outgrown all my female motoros I had. Probably my thickest ray for it's disc width.
And has her Beauty faded Is she just ugly mottled brown was she a beauty when small and progesevly got dull would love to hear ??????Or did she get large and stay a Beauty??

sorry , i have ray about 4 years old, its about 20 inch diameter, is she motoro variant or motoro sp? thanks

I only have a few years experience with Marbles, but also have the trusty internet, making it easy to trace history. :) Have had numerous rays over the 5 year mark and not 15". My big girl has been in the hobby 7 years, and was imported at like 8". I'm sure she'll get to the 2' mark, but of all the Marbles I've ever had she's definetly a freak as far as size goes. Next biggest one I've had also resides with Tanglovers and is probobly 8+ years old and still isn't 20".

My oldest Marble now resides with Tanglovers. He's 12 years old, and has probobly spawned more pups then about any male Marble over here. Was about 16 across when I sold him.

Skynoch can you post up some pics of her? How did she look when she was younger? AAA? What is the footprint of your 2200?

This size thing is funny. We've all talked about it before and there's a trail of all this here on MFK. All you have to do is look for it and keep an open mind. :)

That's one Db ....

Skynoch ordered his marbles with another friend of mine his got about the size of my boesemani is and produced amazing pups ,quality of what I see you guys call "aaa"
They were all nice marbles very stunning when the first got them dbjunkie. They got big like rays do and faded. I look at some of these pics on this post and see 15" marbles in tanks 24" wide ? The nice marbles are only nice because they are yet to fade due to the confines of the tanks size. I do beleive you guys have a strain going around that maybe smaller, but I still guarantee they will get 20" at least and won't look as good as they did when they were 8"

Crazyfish88 you said your rays "only "grew a few inches in a few months. That's a crazy growth rate dude. But in my 8 years experience keeping rays they grow quickest from about when they get to the size yours are 10" ,than it seems they explode 4-5" in a year

Db internet is not trusty to much garbage on it now dude.its freaky
So hard to find good reads now,I wish their was somebody to clean it up. You can pretty much type anything on google search and it will pop up.

Anyways post a few pics of your awsome marbles I've heard so much about.i know your a marble fanatic Im starting to get that problem too lol :)

Growth rates are much more to do with food amounts and quality, water quality and filtration, and stress factors such as crowding or predator companion fish, than tank size.
In fact I think the tank size/growth thing is otherwise largely myth.
If a fish is stunted due to being in a small tank, it is probably because of insufficient food and bad water quality rather than because of the small environment.

How can you keep a big ray in a small tank and maintain quality water? You can't
When I first bought a ray I kept a motoro in a 75 gallon for 3 years. He never grew much ,his tank size was the reason. It was impossible to keep water good , so I beleive Also , that small volume of water is more likely to be the factor why they are not growing, but also I don't beleive if you did find a way to maintain water pristine that the ray would grow 20" in a 16" wide tank? Maybe I did see some hens in a pet shop 10 years ago here lol
