Just how aggressive are GT's?? I am trying to decide what fish to add to my 180 gal w/a 6" oscar, 5" ocell PB, and 8" florida gar.

I want a jag, but I just don't want to risk it killing everything in my tank. I think I will get one eventually but I'm going to house it solo.

I just did some googling on GT's and it looks like they may be slightly more aggressive than I thought (although I hate to base it off of what I saw on youtube, which is a bunch of "GT vs oscar" or "GT vs jag" fight clips of big fish in small tanks).

I have owned 4 GTs thus far (3 being male) and even had a breeding pair in a community tank with Sevs, HRP, Regani and loaches. Even while spawning my pair was never overly aggressive, they would chase others away from their spot but other then that no aggression towards others at all.

However, I have read on here and I have seen youtube clips where GT males are real glass bangers. I have never experienced this type of aggression out of any of my 3 males - but maybe this is because I have always had them with other fish since they were only an inch big.

As a generalization I would rate them as moderatly aggressive. Although there are always exceptions in either direction, as and example I would put them around the same as a JD but far less than a RD or Trimac to use common comparasons.

i have one that rarely shows aggression.. i would also put it with the same aggresion level as a JD. should be fine in that tank

Thanks for the insight. I think I'm going to pick one up from the LFS today and add a little more color to my tank.

So just out of curiosity, in terms of the jags, what other fish do they do ok with? Like dovii / red tiger motas and super agressive fish?

I have seen some where the name fits them perfectly. I have also seen some that are very calm. It all depends on the fish.

I have had 2 GT. My first one i had was ver aggressive. In a 125 gallon tank he would kill everything that was in the tank with him. THe one i have now is aggressive but no where near as much as the first guy i had. I think GT can be very aggressive. But it very from fish to fish. I have a freind who has a 11" male gt thats very mild manor and shows no aggression.

Good lUck!

I kept a female jag with a male mota in the same 180g tank as an oscar and a snook, all of which were fully grown or near it, so it really depends on the fish. I've found that the jags are not as aggressive unless breeding. Although the male jags get much bigger than the females. I bet if you got a female jag you could have put it in with your other fish and would be just fine.

i have 2 jags at the moment, one is in a large tank with a couple of others and it never bothers anyone, on the other hand i have one that is in a 100g by itself because it is mental (full stop) every fish is different its just that some lean more toward the dark side, they tend to be a bit timid for a while but then there characters really come out if they have issues at about 3-4 inches

my point is if you get one just monitor it, it might work well but if it starts misbehaving be prepared to rehome it or dedicate a whole tank to it like i have. they are great characters
