GT and JD Tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
but wouldn't i be better adding the JD first as he is the new fish so he has to be the one to have time to get himself some territory? I have just re arranged to the tank removed my GT, took me 45minutes to catch the little bugger. Chasing him amongst rocks and plants, frustration plus LOL

yeah that is what i thought, and at the moment that is my GT, he'll be going into that tank thinking it is his and be dumbfounded to see my JD there, might put him in his place hopefully. How many days should I leave it?

I am so sorry misread op. Figures my first post would be giving wrong advice however I meant to say put aggressor in last. As far as how long I dont know .

The aggressor is the aggressive one right?? Which is my GT. So yeah he is elsewhere atm and my JD is at the moment quite relaxed and looking at his new home. Fingers crossed it is able to stay his new home. Thanx for everyone's advice. I am loving this website. It is certainly making me addicted to all monster fish LOL

I had the same problem. I would recommend trying dithers (personally I like silver dollars and you should get at least 6 if you can). Or you could try another fish as suggested but I personally had a convict that my GT liked to beat on but she tended to like to punish the JD way more. I finally gave the JD to a friend.

I think you should either try dither fish or give it back to the lfs.

I agree. While it's easy to try to rearrange the tank, it might not take long for your GT to figure things out.

If your tank is big enough, you might want to consider adding some target fish to diffuse the attention/aggression. It's risky though - you might end up with the same problem and more fish.

If I were to take him back and get a female GT instead is y male likely to beat up on her? or are GTs really more a solitary fish like my flowerhorns and need dividing?

Sorry about all the questions. I haven't had that much experience with aggressive fish doing this. The only other monsters I have are my 2 oscars and they are little puppy's lol

Imo they would need dividing. Im having lots of success so far with two males due to the fact there is 4 inches difference between them.
