^if that was the case then no they cant pierce that(they would have to be huge, like a 6 foot mantis maybe) but i drop in a pill bug(which has some tough exoskeleton) or an armored bettle(yet again super tough exoskeleton) and the mantis always wins

I know a mantis is not capable of being able to chew through chain mail... So pretty much...

that would be chitin...

ok. point takin, insect armor is not real armor. but chitin=insect ARMOR. armor is simply a protective covering. so chitin is armor, bulletproof vests are armor, chain mail is armor and if something like a watch where to block/deflect a bullet or knife, then it would be armor!!! armor is simply a descriptive word.

ps. what did ya think of the pix?

Which picture? I went back through the thread and couldn't find any? If you can I would appreciate it if you can take some pictures of the red and melanistic one. The fish is my avatar is a midas cichlid, amphilophus Citrinellus.

EDIT: found your gallery, looking through it now.

sorry for the crappy pix, their constant swaying makes it near impossible to focus on them with the camera. the melenistic one is Shadow, the green one is Verdi, and the orange one is Fiero. shadow got his name, because if he sees a shadow that is moving(usually his own) he attacks it. its hard to capture Fiero's orange color, but he is like the same color orange as his little orange background, with a red stripe down his abdomen. if there is a more regal, proud, elegant, and lethal creature please let me know;)

there is a guy that lives near me and breeds all kinds of mantids. His name is john koern. Here is a link to some of his stuff. He may know where you can find what you are looking for too.
