Moved 6 6inch dorados to a tank with 18inch silver arrow, multiple sized tilapia 4inch~13inch, along with 59inch odeo's and a 16inch VATF. tore down my pond and rebuilding, this is the stock in the 8ft tank.

the VATF didn't eat any of the smaller tilapia, they've been kept in this tank togther for a month so thought it was safe... but tore most the tail of one of my dorados off. Have monitored since and no signs of aggression from the VATF towards other dorado.

Don't think any of the other fish could have done this. Is this just a fluke, perhaps the VATF mistook the dorado's tail for a small fish?

its to the flesh. seriously doubt it will grow back. Have had pygos bounce back from this state. Anyone have experience with this kind of damage on a dorado?

bummer...

I beleive what you have there is a extreme case of fin and tail rot. This is a bacterial infection that usually comes from stress and will not clear up on its own. It is a flesh consuming bacteria and is progressive. If that is the case and that fish is not hospitalized and treated with some antibiotics very soon it will die. No question about it. Once tail rot is established the only thing that will stop the bacteria is some anti-bac treatments.--

I would suggest using broad spectrum antibiotics for both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. If you can get it over there use maracyn and maracyn2 together with high temp(85-89) and salt.

hybrid, the dorado was fine just yesterday, 100% sure it's not fin rot. this was over night, sorry i know the pics arent clear, it's torn to threads. fish are suprisingly strong. if my foot was torn off i would have bled to death long ago...
the fish's color is still good and he's swiming around, will it survive (albeit deformed) or should i put him down?

Well I have had several aces species and others get fin rot and come back to 100% in a matter of a month. So I would not put him down. But just to let you know in aces species fin rot will show no signs one day and completely consume a tail and kill a fish in less the 24hrs. And that wound looks strikingly like tail rot.

But dorado are good healers, so if its a wound it will heal with water changes and some salt to help with regrowth of the slime coat.

And if it is rot, sadly he will be dead in less than a couple of days on average.

good luck and keep a eye on your other fish.

I'd add a good amount of Salt.. If you did'nt allready.

im SURE its not fin rot.
if it were fin rot it wouldnt turn out like that in a matter of 24 hours or less on a dorado.
dorados are pretty hardy to diseases unlike aces.
you'd notice it days before it turns out like that.
im sure it could have been one of the odoes or the VATF,especially since that VATF is 16" and the dorado is just 6".
i'd personally only put them in at 8-10".
