I am thinking about purchasing a pair of these from Rapps and was wondering if anyone keeps these and how do they like them? Please show pics if you have them, Thanks.

I bought some Guianacara last year as the species geayi, but because of the "small spots in the dorsal, and because they exhibit a vertical stripe on the center of the body on and below the lateral line" (Weidner: South American Eartheaters)
it was pointed out that they are probably more likely owroewefi.

At times the dominant males will lose all dark markings, while females retain them.

When I first obtained 20 of them, they were 2" or less.

The 10 I have now are around 4".
They have spawned at least once that I know of, very secretive, they dig caves under wood or rock. The eggs are dark green and were defended well, but it was a very active community so I never saw fry. There are eggs in between the pieces of wood below, as you can see, the parents were still small, when the spawning occurred.

The Guinacara have been fairly non aggressive with other cichlids larger and smaller, in fact I have been using them as targets them to suppress con specific aggression among other volatile species.

The sheer bulk, but yet non aggressive nature of the Guianacara, seem to intimidate, and focus attention of the other species elsewhere.

I have a group of guianacara that were sold to me as sphenozona. I like them, interesting shape and habits; for example they'll use their heads like plows to push sand or leaves, etc. around. Mine are peaceful enough to keep in a tank with (wild) angelfish. They like leaf litter, caves or driftwood pieces or plant leaves to hang out in, but are also out and about a good deal. Little pigs when it comes to food.

Would be interested in seeing some pics of yours when you get them. I've seen some beautiful owroewefi, but they seem to vary some according to where they're collected.

I was also looking at a pair from Rapps...please share more when yours arrive. Thanks for the insightful info Duanes!

Thanks, looking forward to finding out what yours look like and how they might compare to my guianacara, even a brief description would be helpful.

Mine are definitely food oriented and seem to like just about anything-- but mine get NLS, Omega One sinking color pellets, Omega One shrimp pellets, freeze dried blood worms or freeze dried mysis. They like them all equally, love the freeze dried blood worms, naturally, kind of like feeding them candy (I don't feed frozen foods). The ratios have varied while I've had them, but currently about 70% NLS. But really they do well on either or both ime. I've fed and compared both for years and like both, most other well known foods are not as good ime. If you put a gun to my head to feed one or the other I'd probably go with NLS, but mixing in some Omega One benefits the red on the red head geos ime.

Main reason I feed freeze dried blood worms is it works well as a treat to trigger my wild angels and red head geos to spawn, which are in the same tank as (some of) my guianacara. Actually, my guianacara have spawned also, but I'd probably need to move them to another tank to save the fry.
