Gurgling DIY overflow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This has worked well keeping the gurgle down for me, it just balances on the guard screen.

I drilled a quarter " hole in the middle.

what are you using for a guard screen?

also thats not where my gurgling sound is coming from. its coming from the air intake tube outside of the tank

geeez o weeez, i just read all 60 somethin pages of the diy pvc thread. boy let me tell you my eyes and neck hurt. lol. I came to the conclusion that if you want to stop the gurgling noise just slap a ball valve on there. now i just need to get my hand on one of those screens.

i really like your strainer duanes wheredya get it?

Yeah a durso and ball valve are usually the norm on drilled tanks, I dont know why they seem to get overlooked on the DIY PVC overflows. I'd try slapping a durso in the tank and a valve on the drain. Even if the vent hole on the durso becomes plugged wouldnt it not simply act like a drilled tank and form a complete siphon temporarily, and just start continually flushing?

Got that screen from Aquatic Ecosystems online a few years ago, think it was in the aquaponics/plumbing section. Works well, but needs to be rinsed almost daily, because of all the vegatation. No biggy, takes less than a minute.
This one is 2" and threads into normal 2" PVC fitting, also have a 1.5" and 1" on other overflows.
There's a screen just like it under the cap in this pic, also cuts down on the noise from this type overflow.

dursos are pretty simple and very effective. The concept is that since the intake is completly submerged the only air getting sucked in is thru the small hole at the top of the standpipe. I use them on my dual 1.5 inch overflows and it went from airplane toilet flushing to almost no sound at all.

Flows just fine with the cap on as long as the aperatures in the screen don't get plugged with plants, dead fish or debris.
If you don't put a hole in the cap to release air pressure, it will act like wave maker, and the flow will alter making the level of the sump rise and fall. A cool thing if you use the sump as a tide pool refugium.
