Gus, the Columbian tegu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We are currently trying to find him an enclosure, he does have a basking spot, food dish, and large water bowl. He also gets held every day and also roams the a backyard a little bit most days too

Do you have a spare bedroom you could dedicate to him? Setup area basking lights, giant water and food bowl and such.

Or you can buy a big plastic pool or build a wood enclosure with no top, very easy to do.

A room isn't the best idea because eventually the walls will rot due to the humidity
just build an enclosure

Seeing as how Columbian males can hit 3.5-4' and 8lbs it can't be kept in anything smaller then a 6'x3'x2'h enclosure but imo that's too small, so sectioning off a room is a practical solution if its done right.

Say you have a 12'x12' room: use half the room making it a 6'x12' rectangle and all you have to do is build a 6'x12' box (sheet of plywood as the floor) only needing to be 2' high with no top, that way you can fill it with substrate cuz they like to borrow. Throw a humidifier in the room or just bath it daily instead, they should always have a container of water that they can fit in anyways and as far as humidity most house paint is latex based meaning it will not rot walls, my house humidity during summer is constantly 70ish never had any mold issues. Also a window adds natural sunlight coupled with proper ventilation is a Simple 150$-300$ solution instead of buying a giant 400gal+ tank. Don't forget uvb tho, I suggest 2x 36-48" single t8 fixtures properly spaced, hanging on the ceiling or mounted on the wall.

If it was a Argentine blue then we would be talking 1/3 less space required.

just build an enclosure

Didn't mean just throw the thing in the master bedroom but I get how my post threw some off.

Just a thought to save cash

Now I do agree that these animals need a large enclosure, the whole room thing is only good for people who are very handy with power tools and so on. Not everyone is handy, I worked at home depot for over 4 years and trust me, I've met enough people to tell you that most have not a single clue on how to hang a picture let alone divide a room for a lizard.

Yea true. Just a money saving idea that will also benefit the lizard and give it more space and a potential shot at a longer, happier and healthier life!

Like I said earlier your lucky this type of lizard isn't arboreal, or you'd have to build climbing structures, lids etc.

Bathtub ain't gonna cut it for an iggy!

Please update soon. I'd like to see this monster progress

Columbians dont get massively large and usually top out around 36". A whole room isnt really necessary, a 6'x3' would be fine along with getting him out to roam. I use a litter box for water so its big enough to climb in then i just mist the cage when i need to and ive had no issues.
Im glad you found a calm one JK. Most ppl get a columbian and get rid of it pretty fast because theyre unwilling to put the work in to 'tame' them. Mines over 30" now and he was a nut at the beginning but i did tons of research and knew what i was getting into. Not sure if this will help but i get all my foods from hare-today.com. My guy loves the stuff and it makes it easier for me.

I agree it isn't necessary for a giant cage but imo more the merrier from most lizards ;)
