Please welcome Garchomp the Oscar!

I know y'all will probably think I'm crazy, but I got an Oscar because I just couldn't pass up this beauty. He was the best-looking one in the store. He is about 3-4 inches so he has plenty of room to grow. I got rid of over half my stock and now I'm left with four fish (including the oscar). I have 1 Striped Raphael, 1 Pictus, 1 Oscar, and 1 Black Ghost Knife.
Nice! I’m not trying to 💩 on your excitement intentionally, but you better start saving for a bigger tank. From my experience, that Oscar will outgrow the 55 in about 6 months, maybe faster

I'm not getting another tank (teen living with parents), so I can't upgrade. I'm hoping he'll stay around the 10-11-inch mark or I will eventually have to get rid of him. I just fed him, and I'm in love, lol.

I *highly* recommend taking him back. FINWIN FINWIN can you tell him about your oscar brick and your tank size and maintenance schedule along with a picture of him? Actually I think Brick has his own thread you can link to?

You see, *this* is why I recommended you to write down what was there and report back to us so you wouldn’t end up with something as unsuitable for a 55 such as an Oscar.

A 10-11” Oscar won’t work in a 55, but Oscar’s don’t stay 10-11”. But even if you had any hope of the Oscar working in a 55(which you don’t) you’d have to get rid of everything else. I agree, take him back or start working on your parents letting you upgrade to a minimum 4x2x2…again, that’s minimum

For the record, many sources say that an Oscar can live in a 55-gallon. Most said 75, but 55 gallons was the minimum. And I'm not taking him back anytime soon, as I got screwed for some wood by the people...I got a piece of driftwood for 55 dollars, and I realized as we drove home that I didn't need the wood. My dad took it back to the store, but instead of giving me my money back, they just gave me store credit back for it. If they had given me "real" money back for it, I could've had the same amount of money that I originally went in with.

When I returned the other fish, they gave me 25 in store credit; I used that amount to buy the Oscar. I'm kinda mad rn that they screwed me over with that, but not all hope is lost. I can go and get lights or something like that.

Honestly a 4x2x2 won’t take up much more space than a 55 anyway

I've talked to my mom about it multiple times, and every time, she said no. I will keep it for as long as possible and give it the best care I can until I can rehome it. I can't take it back now because I've already wasted more money than intended, and I don't want to lose more money,

I already have a tight budget, and I got the Oscar because it was adorable and reasonably priced. I have the space for it anyway, as my tank is pretty sparse, and the Oscar is small. I know it will grow fast, but at least it isn't in a 20-gallon or something like that, as I have seen and heard stories about people doing that to Oscars.

Most stores will only give a fraction of what it retails for - that’s just the nature of how it works. It sucks, but it is what it is. If you know you will be getting more stuff, I don’t really see a difference between store credit and cash.
Anywhere that says 55 for an Oscar is either lying or dreadfully misinformed. The fish will always get too big to turn around in the tank (even pushing it at 10-11 inches). It’s not much different than keeping an elephant in your living room and hoping it won’t get to full size.
