Gymnogeophagus cool down question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Before I brought back my own fish from Uruguay, I kept my gymnos with harlequin rasboras and white cloud minnows and didn't have any issues. You could also try C. aeneus and serpae tetras as I've caught them down there too.

The best thing is to save up money and just go down there and collect you own fish! It's definitely worth it!

Salt and pepper (C. paleatus) are a good and authentic choice for bottom-dwellers...and widely available.

It's hard to find goodeids at LFS. I'd bet that you can get some on Aquabid or from a fish club.

Rosy barbs are a great choice - hadn't thought about them! Uruguayan tetras aren't available in the hobby. Closest is Buenos Aires. Others than can withstand cooler temps can work as well.

Matt

Sweet. I will look into getting some salt and pepper cories for the tank. :)

I have serpae tetras as dithers in my 75 tank that I keep at 80 degrees and they are fantastic schoolers. While I do love tetras as dithers, I think I will do the rosy barbs just to have a change.

Well I definitely want to do that one day. It would be awesome to take a trip to Uruguay or one of the other SA countries one day in a few years. I have a love for many geos, Retroculus and Satanoperca (admittedly more than gymnos) and would kill to go collect some great earth eaters and severums, and maybe some cool plecos and cories. Definitely a dream. Difficult to do though when your significant other isn't in the hobby.

Sorry for the long delay on pictures. These guys are really shy. I bought 6 Odessa barbs for dithers and it hasn't helped as far as I can tell. Three are really bland looking (black and white), while the slightly larger one is very colorful. Unfortunately I don't really get to see them very often. They spend a lot of time hiding and don't seem to be active very often. I have seen videos of them sifting the sand, but these guys just sit around. The tank temp has dipped low for FL weather the last few nights and the tank temp has dropped to the mid to high 60s at night and the low to mid 70 during the day. Sorry for the mediocre quality photos. My iPhone is the best camera I have. I definitely need a better one. LOL

The first four photos are the best I could get of the colored one. The last is one of the three colorless ones.
