Gymnogeophagus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if your going to keep them outside i would recomend wild cought ones as these have been threw the process before. Jeff rapps has some. tangledupincichlids.com and for a 1k pond maybe.

I am guessing 16 300 watt heaters.

300/5 = 60 1000/60 = 16

16 seems like way too many, considering i am only raising it a few degrees and only a few times per year. I will look into it though. Someone said that they kept them outside all winter without heating is South Lousiana, which i beleive has similar low temps to here. They might be okay, i think.

Also, what water conditions are they found in in the wild (pH, hardness?). My water has a pH of around 7.8 and medium hardness. I think that captive bred ones would actually be hardier, as they do not have to adjust to captivity. Does this make sense? I would prefer captive bred ones if possible.

how deep is your pond?

the ones someone mentioned were Balzanii.

don't know how cold Houston has gotten but we've had some cold fronts here that you would need at least a 3ft depth to keep cichlids from freezing.

I have a 2ft deep and only the feeders survived. Cichs were either frozen and floated or stayed on the bottom.

my pond is 2 feet deep. And in houston, my pond has NEVER frozen, not even the surface. The water has never gotten below 45F to my knowledge, but the air can get down to around 30 at the coldest

I've seen some live for years without doing the cooling thing, but I can't say whether it affected their longevity

Did they breed?? Balzani is one of these that is said to require this ;)

I put 6 Gymnogeophagus in a rubbermaid pond back the end of May, the next week air temps hit 45'F. Just after that an algal bloom hit and nothing could be seen.Thought they were goners.

When it cleared discovered the Gymnos had spawned and there were a number of fry, temps rose to 80s near the surface of the pond in late July and Aug.

I brought them in the end of Sept when water tempscame down in the 50s.
They are now in tanks on my basement floor with temps in the mid 60s.
THey are Gymnogeophagus sp Paso Pache from Uruguay.
