Gymnogeophagus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had them bred for me in a heated tank and thrived for years without any cooling period. Good luck with yours.

I've a friend who bred them without the cooling period as well.
Currently, I have Gymnogeophagus Labatius and I hope they would breed for me. Well in Singapore and Malaysia, there is no cooling period!:)
It's sunny all year round, just like California!

By the way, I had to bring them in, because my pond freezes solid 2 ft down here in Milwaukee, it's 300 gallons, this is a pic from yeaterday.

I never got around to trying this. I just put some CAs and africans out there this year. I am moving soonish (next year or so), so i probably would have to wait until after that to try this. For now, my tanks are too full in the winter. However, it appears that your thrived, so i think it might be okay here. In addition, my newer ponds will be deeper, so they will have an even higher chance. If i ever do it, i will post my findings here - that is, if i remember too :P

I believe severum1 keeps gymnos in his outdoor ponds.

search for cichlid greenhouse, i think its in the diy or general section

I guess I should have posted a little sooner! I have a lot of wild Gymnos for sale, look in my sales forum in the vendor section. Almost any would be fine in your pond, in southern Uruguay it goes down below freezing during the winter. When Felipe shipped me my fish it was 32F and they packed them outside (he keeps all his fish ourside year round in above ground vats, never loses any due to cold). The water was 45F when I got them. G. balzani come from the far northwest on the Brazil border and most domestic strains are from southern Brazil which is much warmer so may not be the best choice. Ken

Which species would you recommend? I just read somewhere that Balzanis were the more cold tolerant, but that could be wrong (I assume it is, after what you said). Thanks :)

Fish I have from Souhtern Uruguay (more cold tolerate)
Gymnogynesis types: G sp Yi, G sp San Borja and G sp Paso Pache 1,
Rhabdodus types: G. sp Paso Uturbey,Sarandi and Paso Pache 2. Ken
