Thanks Mo. I asked the seller for clear pics so I can post them here and sent him a link to this thread.

His ad did say he caught them. I don't know if this is the same Woody but

Not the same one. That's Dan Woodland. Coincidentally this Dan did bring back Steindachneri a long time ago. Someone else has them now. They haven't bred. I think he actually spoke to this seller.

For what it's worth, here's some information from Juan Miquels "Cichlid Room Companion". If you are not a member, I would recommend joining. Without a doubt the authority on all things cichlid.

The fascinating relationships of Herichthys steindachneri and Herichthys sp. 'white labridens', including the probable development of the specialized H. steindachneri from its close relative the white labridens, with which it still hybridizes in small numbers, are really fascinating topics to explore and research.

Herichthys sp. 'white labridens' is not described to our days as when the Herichthys steindachneri discovery to science back in 1899 by Jordan and Snyder produced the scientific description of the later, it was thought that both species were a single one, as differences in young individuals of the two species are subtle (very likely H. steindachneri has evolved sympatrically in Rio Gallinas derived from Herichthys sp. 'white labridens') (Artigas Azas, 2006), later research by Taylor & Miller (1993) determined the identity of the holotype used as of Herichthys steindachneri, leaving Herichthys sp. 'white labridens' without a name, current work will soon produce the description for this fish.

If you get a good photo, look for a scaleless blotch behind the pectoral fin. It would be purple and not red. the fih also shouldn't have any red spots in the dorsal or anal fins or along the body.

I agree on buying from unknown sellers. There was a guy selling yellow labridens on Aquabid that refused to supply any pics except a video from someone that video'd them in the wild. Not his fish.

Having said that these 'steindachneri' would be worth a gamble on.

I emailed the seller a link to this and asked again for clear pics. I also asked if he was 100% sure they are Steindachneri his reply

"Both of them are the correct fish i collected fry under Parents"

Woody fish

LOL so I don't know. Thanks for the help if and when I get them i'll post pics after they settle in.

Then that guys a huge liar or a horrible business man! If he collected fry (plural) from the wild he could make a mint! I know of several people who'd pay hundreds per fish.

Well a lot of cichlid people arent necessarily in it for the 'money'. I hope they are the real deal but even if he collected them from under the parents its possible they are the labridens//steindachneri hybrid like what Mo had caught in the wild. Some good pics would really help out but the bids are already over $200 with 3 hrs to go as is. It's worth the gamble if you can afford it. I'm pretty sure at least the male is a Steindachneri.

I tried to clean up his pic a bit.

But since he's selling them, that wouldn't describe him now would it? :naughty:

My guess is that he had no luck breeding them and just gave up. Gut feeling. I spoke to another informed party who said that he had the same conversation with some of his friends regarding the second fish. It's a Labridens and not Steindachneri. At least someone will have gotten one nice fish for the price.
