H1N1 flu shots for our kids + the regular flu shot

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm worried about the vaccine. It is too new, and too profitable.

As an aside, I wonder how many people truly know what pandemic means? I see the news/media saying pandemic, and using the word like it is supposed to strike fear into the masses. (Which it is doing, btw) It's kind of annoying hearing people at my work talking about this "pandemic", when it is quite obvious they have no idea what that really means.

Agreed... Its not like h1n1 is ravaging our civilizations, wiping out countries, or even towns for that matter...

Too profitable? What do people expect - a business produces a product and it makes profits. Just because it is a pharmaceutical product doesn't mean it is inherently evil and different than buying a chocolate bar or shampoo.

Correlation isn't causation. Someone will always win, that is the way things work. It doesn't mean they played a hand in it or took unfair advantage. Do people who make Tylenol cause headaches or necessarily want people to have headaches?

I got the H1N1 shot yesterday, the first day it was offered in my area. Waited about an hour and a half and hopefully in 2 weeks I'll have protection. I'm not paranoid but I have reasons to take precautions.

When the government discusses a pandemic, people say it is fear-mongering. But if they didn't call it out, people would accuse the government of negligence. Health organizations were worried this was going to be the next bad flu in the spring, and they made a good call in my opinion.

It doesn't matter if 10's of 1000's of people die from the seasonal flu: kids are dying from H1N1 during a time where the flu seasonal is practically non-existent in the Western Hemisphere. This sparks concern for people who are educated in epidemiology. Who cares what conspiracy theorists believe, they cite online, anonymous opinion pieces as facts.

I pay taxes and got a 'free' vaccine ahead of most countries, I'm not complaining. :) I get more mercury from the fish I eat every week, the adjuvant is basically vitamin E, and I'm making antibodies while bypassing the actually infection stage.

You have no idea who I am, do you? :)

EDIT: My life has revolved around Economics for the past 6 years. I am well aware of how businesses run. If there was no profit there, the vaccine would not have been developed. What part of my statement do you disagree with?

Too new: We don't know what complications the vaccine may cause 20 years down the road. Hell, we don't even know 6 months. Read up about when birth control pills started hitting the market.

Too profitable: We have a patent rush here. Companies know that in order for them not to lose MILLIONS of R&D money, they must be the first ones on the market. Therefor, there is a push to produce a product as quickly as possible.

Only one company is producing the vaccine in Canada. Glaxo-kline or some name similar to that. They will make a boatload of money from it. Big Pharma has some of the strongest lobbying groups both in Ottawa, on Capital Hill and at the WHO. Of course they influence policy, and it's gone global.

Conversely, statistics show that when there is news of a pandemic, people start to call in sick for work en masse, fear starts to cause people to make irrational decisions around social compliance and the economy suffers.

To be honest, I'd rather have gov't spend the bucks so as to avoid the downfalls, even if they are driven by mass paranoia.

*Didn't mean to post that, lol. YT only works when I embed videos, for some reason, and I wanted to watch a vid. It's sad, really....

Nah. It was just a random YT vid. When I go to YT, it won't let me watch vids. However, if I embed them in a post on MFK, then hit preview post, I can watch the vid. I did that, but accidentally hit post instead of preview.
