Howdy,

Let me chime in.

First of all: One more personal attack, and I will lock this thread. This is the last warning, DanDanUK warned you before. If you have personal differences, discuss these somewhere else. If you have different opinions on the topic, discuss them like adults. If you have to be rude to make a point, then you are probably wrong.

As a matter of fact, I have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to prejudices regarding nationality or origin. If this happens again, I will have to discuss it with the other moderators and administrators, and I will suggest measures to be taken against those members. Consider this a serious warning. This is an international community of monster fish keepers.

Now shake hands and move on!

Back to the topic:
I inherited an Eheim from my dad, must have been one of the first Eheims made and sold in Germany (1970s). It was decommissioned when I upgraded my tank, must have had more than 10 years of operation under its belt. I also have an Eheim 2211, and it has been running on my 15 gal non-stop for the past 17 years. Since then, I had an Eheim 2228 on my 80 gal (sold the entire set-up) and I am currently operating an Eheim 2080 on my 220 gal. Yes, I am an Eheim guy. Not a blind Eheim loyalist, as Ducati puts it, but a die-hard Eheim loyalist nevertheless.

I had a Fluval back in 1997. It was noisy, had poor filtration, the material was cheap and the quality low. I only used it for about half a year before I switched back to Eheim. I have no clue if the Fluval quality improved or if I had a lemon back in the 90s. All I know is that Eheim works for me, and there is no reason for me to be quiet about it. If someone asks me what filter I recommend, there is only one answer.

You do not have to own a product to be knowledgable about it. Consumer reports and hear-say from close friends with own experience are powerful ways to find out about the quality of a product.

When price is a decision-making factor, not only the initial costs should be considered. The longevity of a product is IMO the biggest factor. Best example is my 2211: It cost me $ 0.25 /month ($50/17yrs/12mo). That's hard to beat.

vanilla__gorilla__: The choice is yours, but I also suggest looking into Eheim. I have no information on the Hagen Fluval FX5

Peace out,

HarleyK Tanks for the help... I just got the report about this thread and I'm pleased to see to see that love has won out over hate.

Manufactures and reps have got to understand that just because someone has had a bad experience with your product or service it is NOT OK to degrade them, remember it is their experience and opinion.

People that see a harsh responce will be LESS inclined to use your product or service.

Customers also have to remember that every company can have a problem with a product and just because you had a bad experiance it dosen't mean that the company is worthless.

Ducati996 thanks for taking HarleyKs post in the spirit it was written.

There has been a lot of interest in this product and I can only hope at least a thread on this site can offer the answer to the questions related to the product.

I think it went off topic when people suggest products other than whats specifically being asked about. Plenty of other threads for that I would think . Folks are trying to gather as much info they can before they make a purchase.
Im sure they can find it here given the chance.

I certainly know of Fluvals troublesome products of years past and kept an open mind regarding my recent purchase for my 220 gallon. I really wasnt concerned about cost (lucky me I guess) but what worked or fit my wish list. Im a big fan of moving water fast vs slow flow rates - a throw back of many years ago. It always worked well for me. For the 220 gallon i was looking for one system to maintain, that had a real good flow rating. The tank is filled with fronts and I would not skimp out in the setup arena. The media basket is huge, and the intakes and exhust flow are slick and lock into place. I do not see an area where quality was cut back, and i feel its designed very, very well. I picked it based on paper specifications which are very impressive ( I havent found a similar competitors product in its price range) like the ability to be able to empty my tank directly from the filter, even below ground level. It does it quickly and mess free. i can do water changes at 50% under 30 minutes complete. I like that alot.....
I have no doubt this is Fluvals make or break product, to really go after market share, and to correct the sins of the past. They certainly pick off some of the best ideas from the competitors and it shows. All that is left is for those actively looking to keep an open mind, and make the decision thats best for you.

Hope this helps those who are interested

Duc

Thanks, guys

Howdy,

repair pulled it. He obviously didn't think the flame war needed any more fuel. I also edited some posts. That's our job. It's nothing personal. I am sure he did not delete anything that contributed significantly to the original question.

I am glad to see that things have settled down. After all, we share a great hobby and have the same interests.
